Software engineer & web performance I measure things instead of guessing.

Our designer went on vacation and a ticket landed on me with a ui decision buried in it. bulk select on a table. "not my job" is usually the right answer to that. if you can't design and there's no designer around, taking the call means shipping a bad ui.

Shipped the toolbar swap. still can't design. didn't need to. a lot of us settled into being the implementation guy because the calls really were out of reach. mine hadn't been for a while and i hadn't checked.

So go through your own backlog. find the thing you keep routing to someone else, and be honest about whether that's because you can't make the call or because you never have. if it's the second one, it's yours. i'd start with the smallest one you can ship this week.

Generating code is free now. verifying it isn't. reviewing agent PRs, the logic is never the problem. it's code that works fine and reimplements a helper already in the repo, or tests that assert the implementation back at itself. the skill now is verification, not generation.

been using Claude /design for prototyping this week. the useful part wasn't the output, it was being able to show a designer something instead of describing it badly over Slack. I still can't design. but arguing about a layout with something on screen is a different conversation.

Figma MCP plus Claude converts a design system pretty faithfully, which turns out to be the problem. Colours someone picked by eye in Figma arrive as real tokens now. The constraints have to go to the agent before it generates.
