Two years ago, Helene changed Western North Carolina forever.
I helped open the first large shelter receiving evacuees. People were coming in from water rescues, some with nothing but the clothes they were wearing. We had no communication, little information, and for those first critical hours, no outside help.
But we had each other.
Before FEMA arrived, neighbors were rescuing neighbors. First responders, volunteers, churches, businesses, nurses, linemen, strangers with chainsaws, trucks, food, water and whatever else they could find simply showed up. Red Cross local volunteers left their own damaged or destroyed homes to help our own.
I will never forget the destruction. But I will also never forget what I saw people do for one another when almost everything else had failed.
On this anniversary, my deepest gratitude is to everyone who showed up. You were the help before the help arrived.
