Search is shifting from “find this” to “tell me when”. From query to condition. Intent can persist after the user leaves, and businesses can move in and out of consideration without another query ever happening. jonoalderson.com/conjecture/…

SEO News: Google Search Console just added a new "Multimodal" filter to the Performance report. Opening the Search type filter now splits the "Web" option into two: Text-based and Multimodal. Google's definition: "Web-multimodal tracks search results triggered by a query that uses an image, photo, or screenshot. Text-only queries are tracked as Web text-based." In practice, that means you can finally isolate discovery coming from: • Google Lens • Circle to Search on Android • Image uploads to Google Search • The Chrome right-click "Search this image" option One important caveat before you get excited: there's no query data for multimodal traffic. Google's own docs say the queries dimension isn't available for this search type (even though there is oddly a column for it), because these searches use images rather than text. So you'll see impressions, clicks and positions – but not the actual search queries. Why it matters: visual search has been unclear in GSC until now. If your business lives on products, packaging, screenshots, plants, parts, artwork, or anything people point a camera at, this new report gives you a better idea of the size of this channel. Check whether the filter has reached your property – it's rolling out gradually, and I'm now seeing it for several accounts. Is multimodal traffic already showing in your Search Console? h/t @rustybrick

‼️ BREAKING: A 16-year-old hacker broke into an internal Microsoft analytics service with a forged, unsigned login token and ran SQL as admin, reaching databases that held over 17 trillion rows, including Bing search analytics and 17,990 employee email records. The service, called Titan, checked every field on the token except its signature, so just claiming to be "admin" got him in, writes the researcher, who goes by Faav. He says he only pulled metadata and two single rows of Bing data, never touched customer data, and reported the flaw to Microsoft the same night. Microsoft locked the endpoint four days later, paid him $5,000, and had editorial control over his write-up, cutting sections and figures and reshaping how the impact was described before it went public.

With more than 95% of votes counted in Russia's State Duma election, Vladimir Putin's United Russia party has taken 355 of the 450 seats in the lower house of parliament, a supermajority. Drone strikes and the suppression of anti-war voices marred the vote.

Google is blocking scrapers in new ways again... But here's the interesting part. I know 100% that certain sites dropped and some recovered with the 9/4 unconfirmed update. When checking one that dropped by nearly 100%, and then fully recovered, here is what the big 3 tools show. ahrefs picks up the recovery. Sistrix does NOT pick up the recovery. Semrush shows recovery, but it lagged a bit. So I think ahrefs is able to still scrape ok, Semrush is still scraping ok, but slower, and Sistrix is way behind. Stay tuned.

Yes, this indeed. Been thinking about this a lot. Both in form as well as content.
Oh it's so much worse than that! 1. To win in AI you have to win in search. 2. To win in search you have to blend in. Conform to the template. Just make sure you fit. Avoid being unique. Be average. 🤮 This is doing real harm to the web ecosystem and Google is to blame.

Oh look, everything we already knew was true - but were told is not true - is true.
Google says its AI Overviews on searches create a better experience and “higher quality” clicks. We were sent research clearly showing otherwise. - AI Overviews didn’t improve satisfaction - and they didn’t improve visit quality - they just reduced clicks to their sources 1/5

We all know Google Search Profile for creators is the new shiny object which by means of scarcity we all want because who doesn't want to be the cool kids. Secretlly is the back door for Google to get their hands on the content for training data. I'm sure deep down in the T&Cs it's burried you write away all your rights and sign over to Google.

Every PMM team I talk to uses Claude. Almost none of them have a system. They start every asset from a blank prompt. Explain who we are, what we sell, which numbers are approved this month. Twenty minutes of context before a single useful sentence. Paid again on every asset, by every person on the team. And it still comes back wrong. A retired metric from a March deck lands in an August email. Nobody catches it until a customer does. Six people write six versions of the story. The value drivers get renumbered and half the library keeps the old order. Every draft ends up waiting on the one person who knows the guardrails, and that person becomes the bottleneck on all output. The problem was never the model. The problem is that you keep asking it to work without the institutional knowledge a new hire gets in week one. 🚀 Eran Kinsbruner, VP of Product Marketing at Checkmarx, spent five months fixing this. His team now runs on three layers in Claude: Projects for context, Skills for procedure, and versioned source files for what's actually true. A one-line request produces a five-touch email sequence with every figure traced to its source and retired language refused, not just absent. Tomorrow he's going to show you exactly how it's built.

The LLM few are considering, but many should be: Reddit’s. Reddit just announced their default UI will start testing an “Ask AI” inclusion as a nav option. In addition, searches already include the equivalent of AI overviews in their results. Unlike Gemini and ChatGPT, so far, there are no external websites linked. In my opinion, this is *the* reason it’s flying under the radar so far. But brands are still mentioned in droves, curating from existing Reddit content to make the recommendations. Quietly, Reddit is building towards a variant of ChatGPT and Google. It already is the fifth most popular website online. This continues to build the story: yes, citations on ChatGPT might have dropped. But if your audience is on Reddit, who cares? Their influence will continue on, and if you’re not considering and aiming to impact that influence, you may eventually be left behind.

Whoa, an "AI contribution pilot" where some can earn from the Gemini app, AI Overviews and AI Mode. Eager to see how this goes: "The AI contribution pilot allows you to earn money when your content contributes significantly to the creation of AI-generated responses shown to users in participating products. Al contribution focuses on the phase of generation where web content can significantly influence what response is generated. Web content may also confirm facts or be linked to within Google's Al after a response is generated, but those instances don't qualify for Al contribution."

I'm reading @AnnieJacobsen's book about Biological warfare so this article is truly terrifying -> Anthropic says it disrupted several potential plots this year by scientists using its models for research that could have helped develop biological weapons "Andrew Weber, a senior fellow on the Council on Strategic Risks who reviewed Anthropic’s report before its release, said the findings were “chilling examples of state-sponsored biological weapons developers tapping into the rapidly advancing capabilities” of leading A.I. models." "In one example from May, a scientist sought Claude’s help with writing a grant application for funding to conduct research intended to experiment on the chikungunya virus, a mosquito-borne malady that can lead to months of severe pain and other symptoms. Such research, known as gain of function, can be legitimate and lead to vaccine development, but it can also create superbug versions of viruses. In this instance, the scientist wanted to engineer mutations to the virus that would make it more harmful as it repeatedly infected live animals." nytimes.com/2026/09/10/us/po…
