Six major U.S. hospital systems have agreed to stop giving puberty blockers, cross-sex hormones, and surgeries to anyone under 18, as part of Justice Department settlements over how the procedures were billed to Medicaid. Texas Children's Hospital agreed to pay more than $10 million and build the country's first dedicated detransition clinic. NYU Langone agreed to pay $8.5 million. Four other systems, including Cleveland Clinic and Mount Sinai, settled for smaller amounts and committed millions more toward care for former patients now detransitioning. The settlements trace back to an HHS-commissioned report called Wolves in White Coats, which found tens of millions of dollars in insurance claims coded in ways that didn't match the actual diagnoses. @Smiddendorp22 has what each of the six hospitals agreed to and how the numbers add up. This is terrible. Brigitte Stegemann was 83, deaf, and spoke English as a second language when a Canadian care facility scheduled her for euthanasia one week after her granddaughter left on a 10-day trip. According to her granddaughter, staff never used the words "death" or "dying" with her. During her competency assessment, Stegemann said she had no living siblings. She had 13, two still alive. She was declared competent minutes later, and the procedure went ahead days after that. Belleville Police say the case is now under criminal investigation. The same week, a Dutch review committee ruled that a physician "acted with due care" in ending the life of a child not yet two years old, the first case under a 2024 protocol expansion covering children ages 1 to 12. The child's treatment team agreed to end the child's life. Independent doctors brought in for a second opinion disagreed, saying there were still pain-control options that hadn't been tried. "It's like a supercharged immune system." Dr. Ron Elfenbein, who treated COVID patients with monoclonal antibody infusions, breaks down what the drug actually is and how it differs from a vaccine. A vaccine trains your body to build its own antibodies over time. A monoclonal antibody treatment skips that step entirely, giving you an already-made antibody through an IV infusion. Elfenbein says patients would often start recovering right away.

The federal government told Dr. Ron Elfenbein his clinic needed to stop using monoclonal antibodies because they no longer worked against Omicron. Elfenbein says his clinic had just finished treating more than 5,000 patients with the drug during the pandemic and recorded zero treatment failures. He says officials pointed to Omicron crossing a 70% threshold as the reason, but that no clinical studies existed at the time showing the treatment had actually lost effectiveness against that variant. Elfenbein had built the infusion program at HHS's own request, part of a federal equity initiative to bring the treatment to underserved communities. A contractor running the program for HHS gave him five days to shut it down in early December, and weeks later the government closed the program nationwide.

HHS asked the public this fall how CDC should sort vaccines into its routine, risk-based, and shared clinical decision-making categories. @ICANdecide filed a formal comment in response, arguing that every vaccine decision, not just some, should require a doctor and patient to weigh the individual's medical history and risk factors before any shot is given. ICAN also told HHS that any vaccine without randomized, placebo-controlled trial data and one to four years of safety follow-up should lose its CDC recommendation, and that VAERS, V-safe, CISA, and VSD are too compromised to catch real safety signals. A Michigan House committee held a hearing last week on an unpublished Henry Ford Health study, the same one at the center of @ICANdecide's film "An Inconvenient Study." Epidemiologist Nicolas Hulscher told lawmakers that in a peer-reviewed reanalysis of the study's raw data, all 22 chronic health conditions tracked showed up more often in vaccinated children than unvaccinated children. Several conditions, including ADHD, diabetes, and intellectual disabilities, appeared zero times in the unvaccinated group. Hulscher was careful to say the data shows an association, not proof that vaccines caused those conditions. The committee also played a clip from ICAN's film of the study's senior author, Dr. Marcus Zervos, saying he was reluctant to publish because he didn't want to "suffer what McCullough did." Henry Ford Health was offered time to open and close the hearing. Like several doctors who helped patients during COVID, he was targeted. Dr. Ron Elfenbein faced 50 years in prison and millions of dollars in fines over a $250 billing dispute. All five patients in question were real, seen, and treated. Elfenbein says the entire case came down to a disagreement over a billing code, not fraud. The toll on his family: two and a half years unable to work, three of his four kids now in therapy, and one who didn't leave his bed for an entire year. A federal judge threw out @RonElfenbeinmd 's Medicare fraud conviction after the jury found him guilty. The judge wrote that the evidence weighs so heavily in Elfenbein's favor that letting the conviction stand would be unjust, and that no reasonable jury could have reached the verdict it did. Right before Trump's inauguration, the outgoing Biden DOJ appealed the ruling anyway. Elfenbein now faces a second criminal trial in January. The American Medical Association filed an amicus brief in his defense, arguing there was no fraud and nothing criminal in what he did. @delbigtree says doctors and scientists who spoke up during the pandemic are losing their licenses worldwide, and Elfenbein's case is part of the same pattern.

He helped patients access COVID treatment. Then Dr. Ron Elfenbein found himself facing federal fraud charges. "A case of shoot first and ask questions later." @RonElfenbeinmd says that's how the judge described the Medicare fraud case against him. Federal prosecutors alleged his COVID testing clinic submitted more than $1.5 million in fraudulent Medicare claims, built on five charts flagged out of the more than 100,000 patients the clinic saw during that period. The government did not allege that any patient suffered a financial loss. Elfenbein says no professional coder reviewed those charts on the government's side. When his own team hired one to review hundreds of charts, he says all of them came back coded correctly. He also says the government got his name wrong throughout the charging documents.

More than 98% of COVID-19 vaccine injury claims have been denied so far. Federal law gives HHS Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. the authority to review or reverse any of those decisions.
