I lost at least $20,000 today from my MetaMask wallet getting drained. I had invested $5,000 worth of
$ETH in launching my new
$JERRY token on Robinhood and had liquidity in
@maxfi. The token went up to $150k marketcap in a few hours and I had at least $20,000 of it in metamask at 6:00pm. I went to the park with my son to play baseball and came back to see all my liquidity pulled from MaxFi and all my
$JERRY sold and sent out to another wallet.
After a few hours investigating, I figured out how I got drained. A fake tiktok account with a lot of followers posing as "the indicator podcast" from NPR had an interview with me Sunday on Microsoft teams saying they were going to pay me to come on their show and asked me all about ICP and what I was doing in crypto including asking for screenshots and videos and sharing my screen.
I went to their website (which looked legit but is dangerous apparently, do not visit) which appears to be where they got my credentials. The team talking to me on Sunday and having all cameras off should have been a red flag but I was too flattered and excited to talk internet-computer:native to a big audience to think straight. It is obvious now I was talking to scammers who didn't actually have a show because they were way to curious about my screen and trying to figure out my exact setup in detail.
Monday they hit a couple of my google accounts. I secured them quickly with 2FA when I saw them sign into ID AI where they were hoping to get my internet-computer:native account and they also signed into TikTok. What I didn't realize is that they got my metamask yesterday because I sent all the funds over to
@oisy immediately at the same time I secured my accounts.
Today, I was so excited to launch my new meme coin and felt safe after reformatting my computer and securing my Google accounts that I thought I was good.
After MetaMask was drained today, I saw they had added google recovery to my MetaMask wallet somehow with my stolen credentials in my browser which I imagine is how they must have loaded my wallet on their device. They also might have gotten my seed phrase from the browser as well. Now I have to do damage control across every account everywhere.
I just asked gemini and they confirmed that what I experienced is a known scam and from now on, I'll be checking every potential interview through AI first. I wish I would have checked and this was a painful lesson to learn.
I have all the emails from them over the last few days and now it looks like I need to find which law enforcement agency to report this to.
I'm grateful for the MaxFi team for helping keep
$JERRY token afloat. The bright side is that the token now has incredible lore and it is truly fair launched now that I'm out.
The best part about all this is that even after losing my $5,000 worth of
$ETH today which had turned into $20,000+ of
$JERRY, these fuckers still didn't ruin my day. Can't steal my joy.
