Yessss new music from HOW TO DRESS WELL × NICK LEÓN @nickleon found.ee/HTDW-TOTJOE "the only true joy on earth is to escape from the prison of our own false self" This is the second time Nick has remixed HTDW, but calling this one a remix doesn't quite capture what we got here. It's a new, nearly ten-minute bangarino: pure Ibiza true joy 4am, Villalobos sweating through tee shirt, the windows at panorama bar opening type vibe. The original is a sparse vocal mantra from my record I Am Toward You built around a line of@mystical poetry from Thomas Merton: "The only true joy on earth is to escape from the prison of our own false self." to me, this line names the shared purpose of love, psychoanalysis, prayer, dancing, singing, and really any genuine attempt at transformation of self: gaining that revelatory distance from the person you have, through repetition and @drudgery, confused yourself for. the shadow you've deluded yourself into mistaking for your true self falls away and true joy enters. I sent Nick the song with this idea of making it severely and ecstatically patient and entrancing. tension accumulates for a long time, then the whole thing breaks open. We passed the tune back and forth until it became something neither of us could have made alone, then trayer mixed it and Zac mastered it. Rave music mantra for ten minutes let's go.
