In Murbai, a rural community in Taraba State, northeastern Nigeria, more than 100 people, many of whom are children, are blind.
Despite the growing number, no one knows why so many residents are losing their sight. HumAngle visited the community and spoke with residents.

Like Mba, the youth leader suspects that the shallow ponds, now the community’s main water source, could be the leading cause of blindness in Murbai.
“Cattle, sheep, and goats drink from there, and sometimes the cattle urinate in it, but people still fetch it no matter what and sometimes, when drinking the water, you can perceive the smell of the urine,” he said.
