At #Pakistan’s 🇵🇰 request, @IAEAorg participated in the ConvEx-2e conducted in conjunction with a national emergency exercise at the Karachi Nuclear Power Generating Station, testing arrangements for emergency assessment, consequence prognosis and timely information sharing. The exercise showcased Pakistan’s continued commitment to strengthening emergency preparedness, supported by close cooperation with the IAEA. “Exercises of this kind form part of the continuous preparedness work of the IAEA Incident and Emergency Centre”, said Amgad Shokr, Director of the IAEA Incident and Emergency Centre. “The IAEA welcomes every opportunity to support countries in strengthening their own arrangements through national exercises.”

Karine Herviou, #IAEA Deputy Director General for Nuclear Safety and Security, and Hamad Ali Mohammed Al Kaabi, Director General, Federal Authority for Nuclear Regulation @FANRUAE signed Practical Arrangements on medical response capacity building for nuclear and radiological emergencies. The Arrangements cover training, exercises and fellowships hosted in the #UAE 🇦🇪, with a focus on States embarking on a nuclear power programme. #IAEAGC

A strong partnership, renewed. During a bilateral meeting held on the sidelines of the #IAEAGC, @IAEAorg and the Ibero-American Forum of Radiological and Nuclear Regulatory Agencies (FORO) signed an extension of their Practical Arrangement on cooperation in Nuclear and Radiation Safety, Emergency Preparedness and Response, and Nuclear Security. For nearly 30 years, the two organizations have worked hand in hand to strengthen safety, security and preparedness across the Ibero-American region, promoting cooperation, knowledge-sharing and regulatory excellence.

A group of delegates attending #IAEAGC visited the @IAEAorg's Nuclear Security Training and Demonstration Centre #NSTDC in Seibersdorf to see firsthand how the facility supports capacity building in #NuclearSecurity. During last week's #IAEAGC the side event organized by #Italy 🇮🇹, “Strengthening TSOs for Robust and Sustainable Nuclear Safety and Security Regulatory Infrastructures highlighted efforts to establish and strengthen Technical and Scientific Support Organizations #TSOs”, to support effective nuclear safety regulatory infrastructures. Speakers from the TSO Forum, EuCAS and Italy’s ENEA @ENEAOfficial emphasized the value of international and regional cooperation among TSOs, including through the IAEA TSO Forum, #ETSON and emerging regional networks. Wrapping up the #IAEAGC, Director of the Division of Radiation, Transport and Waste Safety, Hildegarde, Vandenhove, met with Brazil. 🇧🇷 The meeting included exchanges on nuclear medicine and strengthening regulatory capacities and trainings.

On the final day of the #IAEAGC, the @IAEAorg Division of Radiation, Transport and Waste Safety met with the Nigerian Nuclear Regulatory Authority (NNRA) 🇳🇬 where discussions focused on #NORM. The meeting covered plans for NORM management activities in Nigeria and the strengthening of regulatory infrastructure, with the IAEA reaffirming its readiness to provide technical support.

Participants at the #IAEAGC this week had the opportunity to visit the IAEA’s Radiation Safety Technical Services Laboratory (#RSTS), gaining a behind-the-scenes look at how occupational radiation exposure is monitored and assessed. The tours showcased the technologies, expertise and quality assurance processes that support the IAEA’s radiation protection programme that helps protect workers and supports radiation safety. ⚛️
