A Detroit Black leader told CNN El-Sayed’s team acts like “they don’t necessarily need to work as hard to get the Black vote.” A promised roundtable never came. He met with Mike Rogers’ aides instead.
“I felt so bad, I texted him. But I didn’t hear back. So, f**k him.”
Lansing Mayor Andy Schor backed Haley Stevens in the primary. His Jewish heritage, he says, leaves him uncomfortable with El-Sayed — a longtime critic of Israel who has called the war in Gaza a genocide and declined to say Israel should exist as a Jewish state.
Schor won’t vote for Rogers. He also won’t back El-Sayed, at least until they talk. He still hasn’t heard from him.
“If he doesn’t need me, he doesn’t need me. And that’s their strategic decision.”
Rabbi Aaron Starr, president of the Michigan Board of Rabbis: “I can’t vote for a candidate who won’t affirm my most basic core needs and values.”
CNN: Abdul El-Sayed says he’ll win Michigan by 7 points. Leading state Democrats privately aren’t sure he’ll win at all — and Black and Jewish leaders say his campaign has told them he can make up the votes he loses in their communities elsewhere.
