💊 A human trafficking ring that forced a victim to swallow drugs to smuggle them internationally has been dismantled thanks to the collaboration of authorities in Oman and Zimbabwe. In June, police in Zimbabwe alerted their international counterparts and INTERPOL about a case involving a victim lured to Oman under the pretense of employment. During a layover, the victim was intercepted by members of a criminal network and forced to swallow drug-filled capsules for the onward journey. Upon arrival, the victim was made to expel the drugs, which were destined for distribution in the region. A swift investigation in Oman, with support from INTERPOL, led to the arrest of four individuals, the seizure of drugs and the rescue of the victim. 📷 The X-ray image shows dozens of capsules swallowed by one of the drug mules linked to the same trafficking ring.

🚨 Police ‘hackathon’ identifies sexual exploitation on content subscription sites Seven European countries have joined forces for a four-day ‘hackathon’ to target a human trafficking threat on subscription-based content platforms. Typically the criminal groups involved in these schemes masquerade as legitimate modelling agencies, luring victims with promises of income. Once engaged, they take control of their accounts, applying psychological pressure and coercion to produce increasingly explicit content. This emerging modus operandi was the subject of an INTERPOL Purple Notice earlier this year. 🚨 Global operation safeguards 4,400 potential trafficking victims, detects 13,000 irregular migrants Operation Liberterra III saw the arrest of 3,744 suspects, including more than 1,800 for human trafficking and migrant smuggling offences, based on initial reporting from participating countries. During the operation across 119 countries, law enforcement agencies mobilized more than 14,000 officers, conducting hotspot surveillance and targeted raids, as well as reinforced border controls. Authorities opened more than 720 new investigations, many of which are ongoing. Major findings include: 🔵Trafficking-fueled scam schemes remain a serious concern in Asia and Africa, but improved intelligence, detection and screening mechanisms are resulting in more arrests and hundreds of victims being repatriated. 🔵 While sexual exploitation remains highly reported, forced labour and forced criminality are increasing, with domestic servitude and organ removal also detected. 🔵 Cases involving victims from the Americas and Asia in Africa point to changing trafficking dynamics, contrasting with historically observed patterns of African victims being trafficked abroad. 🔵 Migration patterns in the Americas have largely reversed, with South American nationals now travelling southward through Central America. 🔵There is continued pressure along Atlantic and Mediterranean maritime routes, particularly from West and North Africa toward Europe. 🔵 Authorities are increasingly using online monitoring to detect and track trafficking and smuggling networks. 🔵 Human trafficking and migrant smuggling continue to be closely linked to crimes such as document fraud, money laundering and drug trafficking. 🔗Read more: interpol.int/News-and-Events…
