Red Dress Day on May 5th is a national day of remembrance and awareness for Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women, Girls, and 2Spirit People (MMIWG2S+).
It is a time to honour the lives lost, recognize the families and communities impacted, and acknowledge the ongoing reality of violence faced by Indigenous women, girls, and 2Spirit people in Canada.
The red dress was created as a symbol by Métis artist Jaime Black. It represents both absence and presence. It reminds us of those who are missing and calls attention to a crisis that continues today.
This day is not only about awareness, but about accountability and action.

Two wind projects have been approved for the Thunder Bay and Nipigon areas, with Fort William First Nation and Red Rock Indian Band involved as partners.
One project, Northern Breeze, is a 200 MW development planned north of Thunder Bay. The two Nations will hold a 50% stake in the project alongside the developer. Red Rock Indian Band is also a 50% partner in a second 200 MW wind project near Nipigon. Across Ontario, all 14 newly approved renewable energy projects include Indigenous communities as a key equity stakeholder, with most located in Northern Ontario.
The projects are expected to support future energy demand while creating opportunities for local employment and long-term revenue for communities.

Deadline approaching: First Nations Clean Energy Business Fund (FNCEBF)
A reminder that applications for the FNCEBF 2026 intake are due April 30, 2026.
This program supports Indigenous communities in BC to participate in and lead clean energy development through:
🔹 Capacity funding (up to $50K) for planning, feasibility, and engagement
🔹 Equity funding (up to $500K) for viable clean energy projects
🔹 Revenue sharing agreements tied to projects in traditional territories
As clean energy opportunities continue to grow across the province, this fund remains an important pathway for advancing Indigenous-led projects and partnerships.

Garden River First Nation’s 50 per cent equity partnership in Ontario’s largest planned solar farm is a strong example of Indigenous ownership taking shape in the energy sector. The project, located east of Sault Ste. Marie, was awarded a 20-year contract by Ontario’s IESO and is expected to become Garden River’s first utility-scale renewable energy project. This is the kind of participation that gives communities a direct role in long-term economic opportunity and in shaping the energy future on their own terms.
