“The challenge with #patents is that, in theory, they are supposed to serve the public good and encourage innovation. But in practice, patents can become a barrier to #AccessToMedicines.”
Speaking on #IntellectualProperty and #PublicHealth, Mr @Niimwesiga Seth explained how patent protection gives innovators exclusive rights over qualifying inventions, including pharmaceutical products, for a limited period.
He noted that “TRIPS is the agreement that protects the pharmaceutical, and the #Flexibilities are those options for developing countries to promote public health and access to medicines. The question is - how do we make sure that the person who has created is protected, but at the same time, they are not exploiting that protection?
The discussion also looked at the significant differences that can exist between the #cost of producing medicines and the #prices charged in some markets.
