...why does nothing in the economy push fertility back toward replacement? Perhaps because the institution that historically performed part of that feedback was never principally the market. It was the commons of care. The contemporary fertility decline is partly a consequence of the de-pooling of reproductive labor and care. Modern economies have transferred childrearing from extended kin and neighborhood systems into increasingly isolated households while simultaneously increasing the opportunity cost and organizational complexity of parenting. Commitment pooling may reverse part of this process by making reciprocal care, labor, material support, and emergency capacity visible, dependable, bounded, and shareable across households.

I am bothered hearing people talk about the issue of men and boys playing in women’s and girl’s sports while skirting around reality. A lot of people, especially conservative pundits, are using unnecessary descriptors, such as “biological male”, to avoid speaking the truth. There is only one kind of male or female. If you use the word “biological” in front of either word, it makes you sound like you believe a person can be “trans” as opposed to a “biological” version. I know you don’t think a person can be “trans.” Maybe you think that by straddling the fence you are easing the blow to trans-identifying people. Or, maybe you think it will help you avoid criticism. It won’t do either. You don’t help anyone because it’s a lie. You can have conversations about men and boys in women’s and girls’ spaces without the unnecessary descriptors. It doesn’t mean you hate anyone. It just means you are truthful. Speak the truth and always observe objective reality. This is the best practice for society.

Vulture populations in India collapsed. 500,000 people died as a result. In the 1990s, Indian farmers started using a cheap painkiller called diclofenac on their cattle. When vultures ate the carcasses, the drug destroyed their kidneys. Without vultures, cattle carcasses rotted in fields instead of being stripped clean in 45 minutes. Feral dog populations exploded by five million. Rabies cases surged. Pathogens spread through water supplies. University of Chicago economists compared death rates in districts that used to have vultures to districts that never did. Human mortality rose more than 4% after the collapse. Over 100,000 extra deaths a year. Half a million in five years. India banned the drug in 2006. The vultures still haven't recovered. This is what a keystone species is to us. At the mouth of the Mississippi River, there is a dead zone. A hypoxic zone: water so depleted of oxygen that almost nothing can survive in it. It forms every summer. At its largest, measured in 2017, it covered approximately 8,776 square miles. An area larger than New Jersey, sitting in the Gulf of Mexico, producing almost no marine life. The cause: nitrogen runoff from the Corn Belt. The 90 million acres of corn in the American Midwest require synthetic nitrogen fertiliser, produced from natural gas, applied annually. The soil cannot hold all of it. The excess runs off into streams, into the Missouri, into the Mississippi, and down to the Gulf, where it fertilises algae blooms that consume the oxygen when they decompose. The dead zone has existed in some form since the 1970s, when nitrogen fertiliser use on the Corn Belt expanded to the scale it is now at. The shrimping industry in the Gulf of Mexico has spent fifty years working around a seasonal dead zone the size of a small state, caused by the runoff from a crop that is 40% destined to become ethanol. The ethanol is a fuel additive. The dead zone is an externality. The externality is 8,776 square miles.
