A modern example he pointed to is Soma Oil and Gas, a firm established by former UK Conservative Party leader Michael Howard, who pooled dozens of British oil companies to stake claims along Somalia's strategic coastline. Hassan further explained how imperialist forces deliberately manufactured and weaponised "clanism" as a tool of divide-and-rule. By scattering over a million Somalis abroad, imperial powers fractured national patriotism and replaced it with a localised consciousness. Today, Hassan argues, this vacuum is maintained by a rootless "parasite class" that exploits clan divisions and religion to serve foreign interests at the expense of the majority.
