Every time someone measures resistivity in a magnetic field to learn about fermiology and effective mass, I am reminded that Lev Shubnikov was executed on the basis of falsified charges in Stalin's great purge. It is naive to think that good science can coexist long term in a political regime not built on individual liberties.

Well, one should certainly hope so, and I do, but the regime that killed Shubnikov also produced Ginzburg-Landau… seven years before BCS, and still the more useful theory. And that’s even with Landau having spent a year in the Lubyanka.

Agree but people say this then … vote for Trump. We need a government with enough spending to support non-immediately capitalistic science and public health and education, while maintaining stuff like -real- first amendment rights
