In 2009, Keanu Reeves found himself fighting one of the strangest paternity cases involving a Hollywood celebrity. A Canadian woman named Karen Sala claimed Reeves was the biological father of her four adult children and alleged that the two had been in a relationship for years. Reeves denied something even more fundamental: he said he never met her. Sala was seeking approximately $3 million per month in spousal support, retroactive to 2006, and another $150,000 per month in child support dating all the way back to 1988. Reeves eventually agreed to DNA testing on the advice of his lawyer, hoping to settle the question conclusively. The results excluded Reeves as the father of her children. But Sala didn't accept them. In court, she suggested the DNA results could have been tampered with — or that Reeves had somehow used hypnosis to interfere with the test. It got stranger. According to evidence discussed in court, Sala claimed Reeves could use hypnosis and disguise himself as other people, including her ex-husband. She said she had known him under the name "Marty Spencer" and didn't realize until later that the man was actually Keanu Reeves. Reeves continued to deny ever knowing her. In January 2010, an Ontario judge dismissed the case, describing Sala's allegations as "so incredible" that no reasonable judge would accept them and saying a trial would waste limited judicial resources. Reeves later described the experience simply: "It was horrible. I didn't do it. I'm not the dad."

In 2018, University of Texas student Joey Romano broke his wrist in a skateboarding accident near campus. Worried about what an ambulance might cost him, he did something unusual: he ordered an Uber. His driver, Beni Lukumu, quickly realized this wasn't going to be a normal ride. He helped Romano into the car and took him to urgent care. When staff determined the injury required hospital treatment, Lukumu drove him to the emergency room and then decided not to leave. Romano had no family nearby, so Lukumu gave up the rest of his afternoon and stayed beside a complete stranger for rougly six hours, from 2 p.p. until 8 p.p. He helped check him into the ER, kept him company and refused payment for his time. When Romano's grandmother finally arrived from Houston and offered Lukumu money, he declined. Instead, he accepted an invitation to have dinner with the family. That dinner became the beginning of a friendship. Romano had been struggling after losing his younger brother to leukemia and later said Lukumu's kindness helped him "see the good in the world again". Seven years after that Uber ride, the two were still close friends. He ordered a ride because he needed to get to a hospital. He ended up meeting someone who would remain in his life for years.

In 1947, American children could mail in 15 cents and the top of a Kix cereal box and receive something almost unimaginable today: a toy containing actual radioactive material. The "Lone Ranger Atom Bomb Ring" contained a miniature spinthariscope powered by a tiny amount of polonium-210. After sitting in darkness long enough for their eyes to adjust, kids could remove the red cap, look through a small lens and watch tiny flashes produced as alpha particles struck a zinc-sulfide screen. The advertising didn't hide what it was. Kix promoted the ring as an atomic toy and assured parents that the radioactive material sealed inside was harmless and the ring was "perfectly safe" to wear. The strangest part is what happened with the same isotope decades later. Polonium-210 became internationally notorious after it was used to poison former Russian intelligence officer Alexander Litvinenko in London in 2006. Fortunately, surviving rings aren't still performing their original trick.Polonium-210 has a half-life of only about 138 days, meaning the original radioactive materal has decayed to effectively nothing after nearly 80 years. A cereal promotion in 1947 literally gave children a way to watch radioactive decay with their own eyes.

Per Yngve Ohlin, better known as "Dead", became the vocalist of Norwegian black metal band Mayhem in 1988. His stage name wasn't simply an aesthetic choice — people around him recalled that he genuinely spoke as though he were already dead. Ohlin became obsessed with creating the appearance and atmosphere of death. He wore what became known as corpse paint, reportedly buried his stage clothes so they would smell of decay, kept a dead bird that he would smell before performing, and became notorious for harming himself during live shows. Contemporary accounts from people around the band consistently describe him as deeply withdrawn and increasingly depressed. Years later, psychiatric researchers examined accounts of his behavior and proposed that he may have experienced Cotard syndrome — a rare condition involving delusions that a person is dead, does not exist, or has lost parts of themselves. It remains a retrospective theory, not a diagnosis he received while alive. On April 8, 1991, Dead died by suicide at just 22 years old in the house Mayhem used outside Oslo. What happened afterward became almost as infamous as his death. Mayhem guitarist Øystein "Euronymous" Aarseth discovered his body but photographed the scene before contacting authorities. One of those photographs eventually circulated as the cover of the unauthorized live bootleg "The Dawn of the Black Hearts". The incident disturbed bassist Necrobutcher enough that he left the band. Dead spent years trying to make death feel real onstage. After he was gone, the people around him turned his actual death into part of black metal history.

Researchers calculated Charles' inbreeding coefficient at 0.254, roughly the level expected in the child of two first-degree relatives. Although his parents were uncle and niece, generations of marriages between close relatives had compounded the effect. Charles suffered from serious health and developmental problems throughout his life. Historical accounts describe physical weakness, recurring illnesses and difficulty eating and speaking, while his distinctive "Habsburg jaw" became one of the dynasty's most recognizable features. His health deteriorated severely as he grew older, and despite two marriages, he never produced an heir. Charles died in 1700 at just 38 years old, ending the male line of the Spanish Habsburg dynasty. For generations, the Habsburgs married within their own family partly to preserve their dynasty. In the end, the Spanish Habsburg line they were trying to protect died with Charles.

Harvey Weinstein has been sentenced to 15 years in prison for sexually assaulting former production assistant Miriam Haley in 2006. The 74-year-old was originally convicted in 2020 and sentenced to 23 years, but New York's highest court overturned that conviction in 2024 and ordered a new trial. At his 2025 retrial, a jury again found Weinstein guilty of sexually assaulting Haley. He was sentenced on Wednesday to 15 years behind bars. Weinstein maintained his innocence in court and is expected to appeal. He is also awaiting resentencing in a separate California rape case after that conviction was upheld but his original 15-year sentence was thrown out

Stephen King's drug addiction became so severe during the 1980s that he would write late into the night with cotton swabs stuffed in his nose to stop cocaine-induced bleeding. While writing The Tommyknockers in 1986, King later recalled working until midnight with his heart racing at around 130 beats per minute. By then, cocaine was only part of the problem, he was also heavily dependent on alcohol and other substances. The addiction affected his memory so severely that King said he can barely remember writing Cujo, despite later saying he actually liked the novel and wished he could remember creating his best parts. Eventually, his wife Tabitha and other family members confronted him with evidence of his addiction and pushed him toward recovery. King later got sober and continued writing without the substances he had once feared he needed to create.

In June 2021, German authorities traced his identity and raided his apartment. They reportedly found no firearms and did not arrest him. Two days later, the 28-year-old was found dead in a car outside his parents' home. The timing fueled conspiracy theories almost immediately, but investigators reported no evidence of suicide or foul play. He had a pre-existing heart condition, and authorities concluded that he died of natural causes. JStark died at 28. The design associated with his name continued spreading long after he was gone.
