Hear from Elo Rodriguez, Local 25 Organizer, on how joining the union changed his life and his father’s: “I grew up watching my dad work nonunion his whole life, raising three kids on wages that barely made ends meet. When I got old enough to work alongside him at the refinery, earning $14 an hour with no health insurance and little to no safety protection, it hit me all over again just how hard that life really was. I took the leap, and I never looked back. The difference was immediate. I went from $14 an hour with no benefits to $40 an hour as a journeyman mechanic at Local 25, with health insurance, a pension, and an annuity all part of the package, none of it coming out of my paycheck. And eventually, it gave my dad that foundation too. Between me and the organizer who had first reached out to him years before, we finally brought him in. Today I'm the organizer for Local 25, because I know exactly what it feels like to be on the other side of that conversation. And what I tell every nonunion worker I meet is simple: it is greener. Daniel Poteet, Business Manager of Local 50 out of Columbus, Ohio shares the difference between working nonunion & joining the Insulators: Poteet began in a nonunion shop, where long hours, low pay & little security were the norm. “You were your own advocate, you didn’t have people advocating for you. You still had the itchy fiberglass, the same issues—you just had to fight for yourself. Once I got into the union, I was able to take my kids to Disneyland. I could buy my wife the car she wanted. I could put my kids in a better area of town. Life was just so much better. I worked fewer hours & still gave more to my family” He advanced through leadership roles—serving as an instructor, coordinator, president, & ultimately business manager of his local. Along the way, he never forgot the value of organizing. Today, Local 50 proudly counts 51% of its members as organized, a testament to the culture shift he helped drive.

I had always wanted to get into the trade, but life happens. It's given me a financial freedom I’ve never had before. I’ve also been blessed to meet & work along side some amazing people. It’s also pushed me to get out of my comfort zone & do things I never thought I would. Being apart of the union, I feel like I’m being looked out for & I don’t have to fight for a fair wage.”

Kyle Congrove Vice President of Local 84, out of Akron & Youngstown, Ohio, shares how joining the union changed his life. 💪 “I joined Local 84 in 2006, fresh out of high school & full of attitude. I wasn’t a hard worker — I was a know-it-all kid who didn’t know much. My favorite phrase was “I know,” & one journeyman finally snapped: “If you knew, I wouldn’t have to explain it to your hard-headed self.” That line stuck. It still does. I didn’t just need training — I needed growing up. Somehow, a few old timers & younger members saw something in me worth saving. They didn’t coddle me. They challenged me. They showed me how to shut up, show up, & earn it. That second chance changed everything. I’ve since served as JATF member, Sergeant-at-Arms, e-board, & now Vice President. I tell every apprentice: this union will give you what you’re willing to fight for. It didn’t just give me a career — it gave me a life worth living.
