🇪🇺🇺🇸🇶🇦 Europe just hit pause on one of its own climate rules because it can't afford to lose any more gas this winter.
Starting in January, the EU was going to make gas sellers prove how much methane, a potent greenhouse gas, leaks out while their gas is being produced.
The U.S. and Qatar, two of the world's biggest gas sellers, warned they might just ship their gas elsewhere rather than jump through the hoops.
That's not a threat Europe can shrug off right now.
The Iran war has choked shipments through the Strait of Hormuz, Russian gas is being phased out, and storage is heading into winter well below normal.
U.S. gas alone makes up more than half of what Europe imports by ship.
So yesterday, Ursula von der Leyen told the European Parliament that exporters will get one more year to comply, admitting that people are already having a hard time paying their energy bills.
Brussels woke up, looked outside, and realized a climate rule won't keep anyone warm in January.
