Lights, camera, aircraft! 🎬 Movies were a vital part of morale on board Intrepid. This photo shows that the work didn’t stop when it was movie time – you can see crew members moving bombs behind the movie screen, surrounded by airplane in the Hangar Deck. Movies were announced daily in the ship’s daily schedule, known as the Plan of the Day.

The McDonnell F-4N Phantom II was fast, maneuverable and a favorite among pilots. But its size meant it was too big to take off from or land on Intrepid. Except for this one time... 👀 When one Phantom accidentally landed on the ship, the crew made sure to leave their mark.

We honor the memory of Charles Knochel, who was shot down over Vietnam on this day 60 years ago. John Sherrill served alongside Charles in Attack Squadron VA-176 and considered him a friend. In this segment from John's oral history, he reflects on Charles's final mission and remembers his friend's last moments.

A bracelet can tell an entire story. From 1970–1976, 5 million POW bracelets were distributed. They were meant to be worn until the service member came home alive or was accounted for. Intrepid pilot Edward J. Broms Jr. never came home. Shot down over North Vietnam on August 1, 1968, his remains were not discovered until 2011, 43 years later. On POW/MIA Recognition Day, we honor Broms and all those who were prisoners of war or remain missing in action.

These are the voyages of the Space Shuttle Enterprise! 50 years ago today, NASA's first space shuttle voyaged out of the Rockwell facility in Palmdale for its public unveiling! Hundreds of invited guests, including Star Trek creator Gene Roddenberry and several members of the Star Trek original series cast joined in the first orbiter's rollout celebrations. NASA had originally planned for the orbiter to be named Constitution and scheduled for the rollout for Constitution Day. But President Gerald Ford, after receiving letters from thousands of Trekkies, directed NASA to name the shuttle Enterprise after the fictional starship.

50 years ago today, NASA rolled out Enterprise, the first space shuttle orbiter, in Palmdale, California. The ceremony introduced the orbiter to the world and marked an important milestone in the Space Shuttle Program and space history. NASA planned to name it Constitution, but the orbiter was renamed Enterprise after a letter-writing campaign by Star Trek fans. Members of the original cast and creator Gene Roddenberry attended the rollout. Hispanic sailors have a proud history of service in the U.S. Navy. Among them is Alfonso Chavarrias, gun captain of Gun Tub 10 on Intrepid. During the first kamikaze attack on the ship, Chavarrias and nine others were killed. He left behind his parents, Mexican immigrants who settled in California, three sisters and a one-year-old niece. More than fifty years after his death, the Chavarrias family pushed for Alfonso to be recognized alongside other members of Gun Tub 10. In 2001, the Navy posthumously awarded Chavarrias the Navy Cross. #HispanicHeritageMonth bit.ly/4r2crfP
