People don't paint who they are. They paint what they want, and then they have to live in the room.
I know one who did the whole life in blue. Soft voice. Slow answers. A face that makes other people put their shoulders down. You would swear the mind matches the walls. It doesn't. After the house is quiet the thoughts are yellow. They knock. They move the furniture. They want a louder hour than the one he agreed to. He keeps the blue on anyway. Blue is what he wanted to be, and the wanting outlasted the night.
And I know the other one. Yellow on everything. The laugh gets there before the sentence. The plans are too big for a Tuesday. The room fills because it was painted to be filled. Then the door shuts, and the thoughts are blue. Still. Cold in a way that doesn't perform. Nobody betrayed him. He ordered a bright life, the order arrived, he wore it, and the thinking stayed the shade it had always been.
That's the part that sits wrong once you see it. The paint isn't for the guests first. It's for the person holding the brush. They are trying to stand inside a color their own mind will not sit in.
I did it too. I picked the one that looked like a life. I arranged the week in it. People learned that version, and I learned it back from them, which is how a wish starts answering to its own name.
The thoughts never got the memo. They show up in the old color, usually around 1am, like someone who still has a key.
After enough years you lose the argument. You can't tell if this is you or just the color that stuck. The wanted one feels like skin. The original thought feels like a guest you are polite to, and do not ask to stay.
Some people paint blue with yellow thoughts. Some paint yellow with blue thoughts. Both of them are living in a color they chose, thinking in a color they didn't.
