Over land: +2.57 W/m² per decade. The primary drivers? Clouds and aerosols... not CO₂. So cutting CO₂ emissions does nothing directly to reverse this observed aerosol/cloud-driven brightening. At current rates of increase of 2 to 3 ppm a year - it would take centuries for atmospheric CO₂ to reach anywhere close to 1,000 ppm. This represents the upper biological and physiological tolerance limits of many plants. And at these levels, very little else changes, other than a beneficial increase in agricultural produce and a far greener planet. At current annual increases of 2-3 ppm this is unlikely to happen, however, based on current trajectories. This remains a subject of great disagreement. Comparing CO₂ levels to health limits still highlights a glaring belief gap between actual biological tolerance and ideologically driven beliefs. One year ago (in August 2025), current CO₂ atmospheric levels were 425.65 to 425.88 parts per million. The latest reading from the slopes of the Mauna Loa volcano, is 427.80 ppm to 428.28 ppm. These are tiny annual percentage changes. This compares with CO₂ levels ranging from 1,000 and 2,000 ppm during the Age of the Dinosaurs during the Mesozoic Era, 250 to 66 million years ago. This was one of the times of greatest biogical success, and dinosaurs are widely recognised as one of the most successful land animals to have ever lived. Human health thresholds for toxicity only begin to manifest after continuous exposure above 5,000 ppm (0.5%). This puts any and every potential atmospheric threat many orders of magnitude beyond any possible modern projected trajectory. Commercial greenhouse operators intentionally maintain CO₂ concentrations between 1,000 ppm and 1,500 ppm to optimise photosynthetic rates and crop yields. This accelerates biomass production and enhances water-use efficiency by reducing stomatal conductance, directly mirroring the conditions of lush warm-period epochs like the Eocene. Enclosed environmentals like submarines and space stations safely operate under operational guidelines allowing several thousand parts per million. The US Navy sets operational guidelines for submarines of CO₂ concentrations at 3,000–4,000 ppm. NASA maintains threshold limits on the International Space Station around 3,000–5,000 ppm for extended missions. Given that current atmospheric concentrations sit near 425 ppm, atmospheric CO₂ remains far below levels that pose any physiological or biological hazards. Long-term CO₂ emission trajectories show no possible pathway towards the multi-thousand ppm regimes seen in deep geological time. Throughout Earth’s biological history across the Phanerozoic Eon, CO₂ levels have routinely operated at many times today's atmospheric concentrations without exceeding safety thresholds for plant and animal life. During the early Eocene epoch, 56 to 49 million years ago, atmospheric CO₂ ranged from 680 ppm to over 2,000 ppm. This was one of the most successful biological periods in earth's history, with tropical forests throughout them world and the greatest proliferation of life ever seen. Modern terrestrial flora and fauna evolved from lineage baselines adapted to these higher carbon regimes. Plants utilise C₃ crops (trees, rice, wheat) and C₄ (corn, sugarcane, many grasses), for photosynthetic pathways optimised for higher ambient carbon dioxide concentrations. The C₃ species directly capitalise on elevated CO₂, because they lack the low-C₄ mechanisms of later-evolving C₄ plants.
