I hate that good teachers like her leave the profession, but I understand why. My mother has shared similar stories with me from her time as an educator in California. This is really sad.

People are saying, "NHJ put her ideology over her kids." Listen, that's what parents do. Joe Jackson did it. Richard Williams did it. Earl Woods did it. Even the Black folks who send their kids to fancy schools, knowing that it's not always great to be Black in those environments, do it. The problem wasn't that she chose her values over her children; it's that she didn't think sufficiently deeply about what those values entail, e.g., supplemental education from pre-k on.

Liberal parents really think their kids are plug and play devices. People, raising kids is not like operating a Mac. Nothing just works because you got the most expensive version.

A lot of people are accepting NHJ's diagnosis of her own screw-ups, when NHJ has a history of misdiagnosing her own screw-ups. Just because NHJ says she screwed up by sending her kid to PS 307 instead of a fancy school, doesn't mean that NHJ wasn't poised to screw up her kid at the fancy school, or that other, better parents couldn't have gotten through PS 307 with academically prepared kids.

There is this idea that Spence or Brearley would have saved NHJ's daughter. Maybe. But I think it's more likely that a first generation Indian-American Brahmin could have gone to PS 307 and tested into Stuyvesant. There is nothing in NHJ's piece that tells me that she has the sensibilities of a good parent at the granular level.

I wonder what the Venn diagram looks like of the folks who have an "it's complicated" view of NHJ's crappy parenting and Lindsay Clancy murdering her children.

Some people are asking of the Nikole Hannah Jones situation, "Where was the father!" A few things are going on. We can take NHJ's view that they moved forward as a unit. OR we can appreciate the number of Black fathers who tried to stop their wives from screwing up their kids and were served divorce papers for the trouble.
