Here is an impressive water vapor loop indicating a powerful Nor'easter. The difference between dry air on the eastern and southeastern portion of the circulation, compared to the moist air on the northern and western portion of the circulation indicates baroclinicity

Now that the nor'easter completed its phase with a tropopause vortex and is decidedly non-tropical, let's look back at its structural evolution over the last day and a half, and why despite attempting to start the tropical transition process, it fell short of classification:
The much talked about nor'easter is now well underway, with a large cyclone producing widespread rain and significant coastal flooding slowly making its way north.

That would be 88 years ago today
For my documentary, I reconstructed what a forecast cone would look like for the 1938 hurricane today. Computer models today would've been screaming at us for days to evacuate Long Island and coastal Southern New England for this monster.
This reconstructed cone is displayed exactly 48 hours prior to landfall. With today's forecasting abilities and the environmental factors around the hurricane, the cone would likely have been very narrow (if not more narrow than what is shown).
Although New England sees a major hurricane about every 50-70 years, a 1938-type event likely occurs every 300-400+ years.

Here are a few fun facts! 🧩
The east coast of the United States has only been hit by one major hurricane (Category 3–5) in the past 30 years (Jeanne, 2004). So, there have been none in the last two decades.
No state north of Florida have been struck by a major hurricane in more than 30 years (Fran, 1996).
New England has not been hit by a major since Carol (1954). The most recent overall was Bob (1991).
A major hurricane has not made direct landfall in the state of Georgia since 1898.
By this metric, it's the quietest 30-year period for the east coast in over a century.
There were six MHs from 1907–36, eleven from 1937–66, and three from 1967–96. However, the 1967–96 period had the fewest overall hurricane landfalls in the mix with fourteen. The most was 1937–66 with 32 total hurricane strikes.
