Let me explain clearly why Coastal Football fans are justifiably upset right now: A few years ago, Coastal Carolina football was not a punchline. It was a standard. In 2020 and 2021 this program, despite being a Group of 5 school, became nationally known. We went 11-0. We climbed to a top-10 national ranking. We played with a style and a swagger that made people outside the Sun Belt learn how to pronounce “Chanticleer.” A winning culture in the FBS was firmly established in Conway (not to mention all the FCS success). That standard did not expire when the rankings faded. It was supposed to be the floor. Then, the coach who helped build it left. What followed was three years of a program that had already proven it could win being slowly ground down into something smaller, sloppier, and less dangerous. We paid a lot of money to end that chapter. We did it because the athletic department itself said the expectation was Sun Belt titles and Playoff contention—not bowl eligibility as a ceiling. So we went out and hired a young coach who was supposed to restore the climb. The quarterbacks looked the part in the offseason. The defense seemed to be vastly improved. The first game, at West Virginia, offered a real glimpse: a 21-0 hole, a second-half fight, a one-score loss on the road against a Power program. That was allowable. That was hope. The second game, against an FCS opponent, looked like a team finding its footing. The third game, not so much. At Delaware we were anemic, mistake-ridden, and self-destructive in a game we were in position to win. The head coach said the penalties and sloppiness would be cleaned up. That is the job. That is the promise. Thursday night was the test of that promise. On national television, at home, in front of a record crowd, against a rival coached by the man who once made this place matter, we led 17-10 at halftime… and then disappeared. Twenty-four unanswered points against. FIFTEEN penalties for 117 yards. At LEAST eight dropped passes. Two interceptions from a quarterback who had not thrown one all year. Seventy-nine rushing yards as a team. Seventy nine!! NEGATIVE rushing yards after the half. Every phase of the game failed at once. THAT is why we are upset. Not because a new staff is still installing a system. Not because a freshman quarterback is still learning. Not because a tough loss or two in September ends a season. We are upset because the same failures keep showing up after they were publicly identified and publicly promised away. We are upset because four games in we STILL cannot run the football or pass protect. We are upset because a program that used to impose its will now looks physically and mentally overmatched in the second half of its own stadium. We are upset because a few years ago this team was a national story, and now it is being mocked on national television in the building it once made famous after being promised all the issues would be addressed in the offseason. A new staff gets time. Of course. A new quarterback gets grace - especially a freshman. What no one is obligated to accept is watching the standard get lowered in real time and being told to call it patience. This fan base was taught what Coastal football can (and should) look like. We remember it. We paid for it. We showed up for it on a Thursday night expecting to see it again. We expect better and are HUNGRY for better after three seasons of mediocre-at-best football. And after everything this program already proved it can be, we DESERVE better.
