UNSCRIPTED: “CROWING” him too soon.
Y’all are trying to crown Deshaun Watson king, and I’m still waiting on the $230 MILLION performance.
That contract is fully guaranteed. The accuracy? Still inconsistent. A 42.9 PFF grade against Carolina. A 62.9 against Pittsburgh. Missing open receivers, including Harold Fannin on a play that could have helped close out the Steelers game.
Through his first four games this season: 2 interceptions, 3 fumbles, 1 lost, for 3 total turnovers, plus 11 sacks and 35 incomplete passes. Add the missed reads and open receivers in critical moments, and I’m still seeing a quarterback who struggles under pressure. Yet y’all want to crown him king. Not one elite pass, yet y’all were loud about Sanders supposedly lacking arm talent. Now, suddenly, arm talent doesn’t matter when it’s anyone but Sanders. Keep that same standard.
ANNNNND…. PFF’s player page, updated October 2, lists him at a 60.0 overall grade, 26th of 36 qualifying quarterbacks, and a 58.3 passing grade, 27th of 36.
A few wins don’t erase years of unmet expectations. In my opinion, he has not delivered anything close to the value of that contract.
Before we hand him a crown, let’s see him consistently perform like the franchise quarterback Cleveland paid for.
The money is guaranteed. The crown has to be earned. Three wins don’t earn him that crown. I’m not saying hate Watson. I’m saying demand consistency, and don’t burn the boats on everybody else too soon.
Because if this were Sanders, y’all would still be telling him to prove himself seven games later. Keep the same standard.
