Fantastic to visit GS Boxing Academy in Ilford and meet some of our talented young boxers! 🥊 From just 4 to 40 members in a matter of months, the academy truly is going from strength to strength. The club helps young people build confidence, discipline and fosters a real sense of community. A huge thank you to Gabar Singh and his team for the brilliant work they do inspiring the next generation!

After months of campaigning alongside fellow MPs @Margaret4DR and @wesstreeting, I am delighted to announce that we have finally secured an additional £42.1 million for a new A&E department at Queen’s Hospital! This funding will deliver: ✅ A new, expanded and modern A&E department. ✅ A refurbished Children’s A&E department. ✅ Improved digital systems. ✅ Improvements aimed at reducing waiting times. Thank you to everyone who worked with us to make this happen! bhrhospitals.nhs.uk/new-emer…

British national Jagtar Singh Johal was finally granted bail earlier this month. But his ordeal is far from over. With eight outstanding cases still hanging over him and bail conditions requiring him to surrender his passport, Jagtar remains trapped in India, thousands of miles from his home and family in Dumbarton. For 9 long years, Jagtar has been languishing in a foreign prison in what the UN has confirmed is arbitrary detention. Nine years cannot become ten. His bail must be the catalyst that finally brings Jagtar safely home.

Another day, another APPG! It was a privilege to chair our packed APPG on Obstructive Sleep Apnoea with @lregan7. We explored its impact on Black and Asian women, why it is so often overlooked, and its links to dementia and certain cancers. An insightful discussion focused on improving diagnosis and the experiences of those living with the condition.

Delighted to have been elected Chair of the All-Party Parliamentary Group on Deliberative Democracy at our inaugural meeting in Parliament today! I firmly believe that politics should be something that happens with people, not just to them. Through initiatives like citizens’ assemblies, we can give people a greater say in the decisions that affect their lives, and help rebuild trust in politics. I’m looking forward to working together to put deliberative democracy firmly on the agenda!

Deeply distressing to hear reports of a young girl facing harassment on a bus for wearing her hijab. My heart goes out to her and her family. The Council Leader @KamRai7 and I, have been liaising with the authorities. Nobody should face hate. Redbridge stands against racism.

I’m aware that in the past day a man has physically and verbally accosted at least 4 different turban wearing Sikhs including a child. Possibly for social media. The police are aware of the racially aggravated nature and investigating. Please report any instances to 999.

Great to attend the Islam Channel Awards, celebrating the achievements and contributions of British Muslim businesses. For over 20 years, Islam Channel has played an important role in championing the achievements of British Muslims, bringing communities together and raising millions of pounds for charity.

A huge relief to hear that Jagtar Singh Johal has been released on bail after nine long years of detention in India. I know this will be an incredibly emotional moment for his family and friends, who have lived for years with fear and uncertainty over Jagtar’s safety and well-being. This is an important step forward, but now we must bring this British national home. Jagtar belongs with his family in Dumbarton.
Jagtar Singh Johal, who was detained in India in 2017 without conviction, has been released on bail. Mr Johal's supporters say he faces restrictive bail conditions. His family say he was detained for blogging about alleged human rights abuses against the Sikh community.

A brilliant evening with local businesses at the Ilford BID Networking Evening. It was great to speak with the businesses that keep our high streets thriving. We discussed everything from support with rising running costs to how we can bring more footfall into Ilford South. I’m keen to continue championing our local entrepreneurs, who embody so much of the talent, ambition and character of Ilford. Thank you to Cyril and the team at @IlfordBID for organising such an insightful evening.

An excellent week at Labour conference! Andy Burnham set out a clear vision for Britain: good growth in every postcode, essential services that work in the public interest, people supported at every stage of life - from young people taking their first steps into adulthood, to those who need dignity and security through social care. There is, of course, much more work to do. I know there are issues that matter deeply to people across Ilford South, like student loans. But I left Conference determined about what we can achieve together and ready to keep making the case for Ilford South and delivering the change our community deserves.

Brexit has done more harm than good, particularly in London, and it's time we were honest about it. @SadiqKhan is right to say that closer ties with Europe mean more opportunity, stronger security and a better future for the UK.
