The poorest billionaire in California will make about $300 million this year. If we pass the CA wealth tax, he will only make $235 million. In exchange, millions of the poorest Californians will get health insurance. That's the tradeoff billionaires are not willing to make.
Community note
The proposed CA wealth tax (Prop. 40) is a one-time 5% tax on net worth above ~$1B for residents, not a reduction in annual earnings or what billionaires "make" that year. It taxes accumulated assets, unlike income taxes on earnings flows. calmatters.org/politics/2026/… ballotpedia.org/California_One… spur.org/voter-guide/20… taxfoundation.org/blog/comparing…

NBC News: within 15 minutes of the Cornell campus alert on the sexual assault in November 8, 2024, tips came on to the campus police: * the names of men * the existence of a GroupMe fraternity group chat where frat brothers were discussing what happened * two women at the house that night said the fraternity brothers assured them the incident was consensual — and later asked one of them not to talk about it * a screen recording of a Snapchat conversation among Chi Phi members from that night, where one advertised “free p----y” in an upstairs bedroom * a caller said one of the men identified was her ex-boyfriend, and he told her that he “had attended a party at Chi Phi” where a woman had been “sexually assaulted by several males and coerced into consuming ketamine and other drugs.” And more. Much of the information was never passed on to the Tompkins County DA Office.

Wanted this card and bid a fair amount on it. The seller clearly wasn’t satisfied, bid over me and then relisted BIN for thousands more. eBay is more trouble than it’s worth 🙄 @eBay @CardPurchaser

At 3:54 pm Donald Trump emerged from the White House with freshly colored hair and makeup, as Marine One’s engine roared in the background. He walked directly over to the waiting press, threw his hands out in front of him, gesturing at the empty ground in front of him, while he squeezed his legs together and arched his torso forward, yelling to the reporters, “This is the way the White House is supposed to look. Not asphalt. Broken, dirty asphalt. Look at it.” He then paused, frowning as he looked over his left shoulder, and continued, “The finest stone you could buy anywhere in the world.” The gathered press said nothing, confused by his odd behavior. The President then took three steps forward and appeared to remember why he had come outside in the first place. “Okay. So, I’m heading to Alabama, a place that I won all three times. Record votes, like Texas, like Oklahoma, like a lot of them. And we’re going to give a little speech, and I hope they like it.” For the next 6 minutes and 52 seconds, we watched the President struggle to answer questions, follow the conversation, and even walk in a straight line. Donald Trump is gravely unwell, and whatever is behind his serious decline appears to be rapidly accelerating. open.substack.com/pub/heathe…

Emma Joyce was sick and vomiting for days when she died. The next summer, Ava Joan got sick: wouldn't eat or drink, rapid breathing, and her vomit was black. It was untreated diabetes. Their toddler brother was next to die. Years later, another brother. propublica.org/article/idaho…

Just asked Victor Wembanyama if he’d ever consider promoting a sports betting company. “Absolutely not. I will never do that. Honestly, I think it's very sad to see some players promote it. …Everybody does whatever they want, but without me.”

For more than two months, I have been working on a truly horrific story about one of the gravest war crimes committed by the United States since Vietnam: The bombing of the Shajareh Tayyebeh school in Minab, Iran. It was one of the first targets struck in the opening hours of the war on February 28, 2026. At least 156 people were killed in the U.S. cruise missile strikes—120 of them were children and 26 were teachers. We spoke to survivors, first responders, parents, doctors, teachers, psychologists, and other witnesses. Some of them had never before shared their experiences of that day. It would be impossible to do justice to what happened in Minab that day with words alone. In more than 25 years in journalism and reporting on war, I do not believe I have reported on a more heinous single crime. Massacre at Minab: The School That Became a Grave dropsitenews.com/p/minab-sch… Please share this story with as many people as you can.
