What treasures are hidden inside the collections of the Jesuits in Britain? On Wednesday 7 October, Heythrop Library and the British Jesuit Archives are opening their doors, offering a rare opportunity to explore remarkable material from their collections. Relics, rare books and historical documents will be on display alongside more modern material, with archivists and librarians on hand to reveal the stories behind them and bring centuries of Jesuit history to life. The Children’s Commissioner for England, @Rachel_deSouza, has called for greater protection for refugee and asylum-seeking children in the inaugural Jesuit Refugee Service UK Annual Lecture. Speaking in central London, Dame Rachel urged policymakers and the wider public to look beyond increasingly polarised rhetoric around migration and recognise the children at the heart of the debate. She spoke about children who have experienced violence, exploitation and trafficking on their journeys to the UK, and raised particular concerns about young people whose ages are disputed by the authorities. Dame Rachel also shared the story of her own mother, who was a refugee child in 1945, and reflected on what the treatment of refugee children says about the kind of society we want to be. Sunday, 27 September, marks the World Day of Migrants and Refugees. My thoughts go out to migrants and refugees, especially minors compelled to leave their homeland. Children and teenagers are the most vulnerable. They often endure unspeakable suffering, violence, torture, exploitation, and traumatic conditions. It is not uncommon for them to lose their lives along migration routes. I appeal to everyone’s sense of responsibility: may we all feel a sense of involvement in the lives of these young people, who must always be protected and supported.

Two representatives of Jesuits in Britain have met Pope Leo XIV in Rome as part of a delegation presenting the Catholic Generosity Report, a major study of giving, philanthropy and charitable activity across the Catholic community. Fr Keith McMillan SJ, Head of Finance at Jesuits in Britain, and John Green, Fundraising Manager for the British Province and Chair of Catholics in Fundraising, joined fellow Catholic fundraising professionals for the presentation following the Pope’s General Audience in St Peter’s Square. John presented the report directly to Pope Leo, with Fr Keith alongside him as part of the delegation. The report highlights the importance of collaboration across Catholic charities, dioceses, schools, religious orders and philanthropists, and explores how the Church’s resources can be used to support its mission and serve communities into the future. Jesuit Refugee Service UK (JRS UK) has joined fellow Catholic charities at 10 Downing Street to deliver a petition calling on the government to defend the right to asylum and uphold the dignity of people seeking refuge in the UK. The petition, organised by JRS UK, Caritas Social Action Network (CSAN) and the St Vincent de Paul Society (SVP), has received support from parishes and individuals across the country. Ahead of the Church’s World Day of Migrants and Refugees on 27 September, the Welcome the Stranger: Defend Asylum campaign is calling for an asylum system rooted in dignity, protection and welcome. More than 200 people gathered at Farm Street Church in London for a special Mass celebrating 20 years of Pray As You Go, the daily prayer ministry of the Jesuits in Britain. Founded by Fr Peter Scally SJ in 2006, Pray As You Go began as an experiment in daily audio prayer and now reaches more than half a million people each year, with versions developed in languages and cultures around the world. The anniversary Mass brought together people who have helped shape the ministry over two decades, including representatives of its growing international community. Campion Hall is marking 130 years of Jesuit life and learning at the University of Oxford, where generations of Jesuits and others have lived, studied and contributed to the intellectual life of the University. Founded in 1896 as Clarke’s Hall, it became a Permanent Private Hall of the University in 1918 and was later renamed Campion Hall in honour of St Edmund Campion SJ. The Hall’s long history has included connections with some remarkable figures, including the writer Evelyn Waugh and physicist Albert Einstein, who appears alongside members of Campion Hall in a photograph taken at an Oxford Union event. A new publication exploring how Ignatian spirituality is lived and practised today will launch this autumn. Studies in Ignatian Practice brings research and lived experience together, with its first issue exploring what happens after people complete the Spiritual Exercises and how they can carry that experience into everyday life. The first article, by Dr Annemarie Paulin-Campbell, who works freelance internationally, training Spiritual Directors and doing Ignatian spirituality research and writing, explores how people can continue living in the spirit of the Exercises after the retreat ends. Heythrop Library is marking 100 years since its philosophy and theology collections were reunited at Heythrop Hall in Oxfordshire in 1926. The story of the Library stretches back more than four centuries, to 1614 when English Jesuits established a house of studies in Leuven. Since then, its collections have moved repeatedly across Europe and Britain, reflecting the changing circumstances of the Society of Jesus and Catholic education. Today, the Library continues to serve a diverse community of readers, with particularly strong collections in Ignatian spirituality and Jesuitica, alongside theology, philosophy and related subjects. As Heythrop marks its centenary, the focus is not only on its remarkable history but on ensuring that this unique collection remains relevant and accessible for generations to come. A new Jesuit prayer resource for children and young people has launched at the start of the new school year. Pray As You Grow offers short, immersive audio prayer sessions that invite children to enter imaginatively into scenes from Scripture and reflect on their own responses. Developed by the Jesuit Institute and Pray As You Go, the resource is designed for use both at home and in the classroom, with sessions tailored to three different age groups. The first series, Creation and Covenant, is now available, alongside other prayer resources for children and young people.
