Right road but wrong direction… it just means that Peking Math Department is really just a utilitarian business school LARPing as a real Math department… while MIT and Polytechnique are the real deal…
Wang Hong was the near bottom of her class at Peking University.
She won the Fields Medal.
What does that tell us?
It tells us that winning Fields isn't THAT much about cutting-edge raw talent- it's more about a nurturing ecosystem that optimises for it.
France does that.
That's why they win considerably more Fields medals per capita than USA and infinitely more than China.
They pick decent talent from all over the world, give them tons of mentoring and no administrative responsibilities.
You are just there, focusing on research with comparatively little pressure.
It's the ideal environment to crack novel theoretical problems.
China doesn't see much value in that. Pushing forward theoretical math is a nice to have, but they have bigger problems: A.I. architecture, operations research or 6th generation fighter jets.
Is China's education system flawed?
No, their AI researchers completely stomp.
Elon himself said if China had anywhere near the same amount of compute they would completely mog Anthropic and OpenAI while spending a fraction of the capex.
Winning Fields medals and Nobel prizes are high orestige but low ROI.
Reaching Fable-level AI on Nintendo toaster compute is high ROI.
And that's what all the cracked Chinese mathematicians are focusing on.
