It’s interesting to see people asking why all the Earl Spencer nonsense is dominating major news sites when there are so many more important stories. This is one consequence of the digital-first shift in the media that gets too little attention: clicks increasingly determine not just a story’s prominence, but the kind of stories that get commissioned in the first place. The result is a media increasingly shaped by what generates traffic rather than what matters. That’s damaging for journalism, and for all of us who consume it.
