Despite the record, the O’s did improve on paper in 2026. They added leadership and more from Alonso, had surprising breakouts from CES, Blaze, Mayo, Young, a much improved rotation overall, and yet SOMEHOW finished far below expectations from last year’s disaster.

When it’s all said and done, Alonso might be the best free agent signing the Orioles have ever made. He’s everything and more. But I can’t help but think how criminal it is that we can’t see this in the playoffs. Padding the stats is fun but man, it didn’t have to be this way.

As disappointing as the O’s season has been, the Jays are about to miss the playoffs after reaching Game 7 of the WS last year. A major factor for both teams was their star players (Gunnar, Vlad) had career-low seasons. Eliminating a division rival is a small consolation prize.
The Blue Jays and Orioles each have an elimination number of 1. That means the loser of Game 1 of Wednesday’s doubleheader will be eliminated from postseason contention.
Both teams could be eliminated by the end of the night.
