Red Bull is putting on one of its coolest events ever today. Max Verstappen will attempt to beat 100 other drivers in a go-kart race around Silverstone. The rules are simple: Max has to start dead last (101st), and then he has 30 laps to overtake every other driver. Everyone is using the exact same kart, so there is no advantage, and the race is available on ESPN and Disney+. Such a great idea (and something only Red Bull would do).

Breer says in this video that countries in the Middle East have made "strong bids" to host NFL games. He also says Tokyo, Italy, and others might be next, and that Melbourne got yesterday's game instead of Sydney because it offered the NFL a much better deal. Super interesting.

For context, the numbers haven't been disclosed, but Australian outlets have reported that the NFL signed a three-game deal with Melbourne worth roughly $45 million. If true, that's $15 million per game.

It's hilarious that tonight's game is effectively being used to determine whether jet lag is real when in reality there are two approaches to international travel: 1) arrive early enough to adapt or 2) arrive late enough to stay on a consistent time zone. The 49ers took one approach; the Rams took the other. But neither approach is necessarily wrong, and just because one team wins doesn't mean that is the protocol everyone should follow.

One interesting example is that Formula 1 drivers often use a combination of both protocols. They arrive early enough for some races to adjust to the time zone, and then, in places like Singapore, they go to bed at 5 am and wake up at 2 pm to stay on European time.

That said, the NFL can't be happy with the Rams' approach. Not only are the Rams the home team, but they also own the international marketing rights in Australia. Their job is to win games, but I'm sure the NFL would have liked them to do at least some promotional activities.

Melbourne Cricket Ground has 100,000 seats and should be an awesome venue for an NFL game. But the large oval also changes the experience. The first row is 165 feet from the sideline, compared to 45-50 feet at NFL stadiums, and the field itself takes up only ~25% of the grass.
