One thing I like about running that's different from other sports is you can get pretty far just by showing up. Like you can have no talent and still podium at local races just by bashing your head against a brick wall.

The Roman Empire peaked in 117AD and didn't collapse until 1204 or 1406 depending on your perspective.
Ottoman history is weird because apparently they were in decline since the late 1600s.
It honestly feels uniquely Turkish to be in perpetual decline for literal centuries without ever actually collapsing until the very end.
