“This is now a pandemic of the unvaccinated. It is now a pandemic of choice - the choice not to get vaccinated - and it’s a choice that’s having a profound impact, a bad one, on the rest of us. … If the unvaccinated are not to blame, who is? … Why the hell do I have to pay the price for this?”
John Berman holds a BA in social studies from Harvard after Phillips Academy Andover. He is a CNN anchor (New Day, now News Central). He is a journalist. He has no medical degree, no epidemiology, and no public-health training. A morning desk is not a laboratory.
In July 2021 he and co-anchor Brianna Keilar ran a New Day segment whose chyron announced that facts showed the unvaccinated were to blame. He called the surge a “pandemic of choice,” asked who else could possibly be at fault, and demanded of CDC Director Rochelle Walensky why the vaccinated had to “pay the price.” He treated a non-sterilizing shot as a moral binary and used national television to assign collective guilt.
Nine months later, in April 2022, he collapsed near mile 25 of the Boston Marathon with heatstroke and rhabdomyolysis, woke up in an ER with no memory of the last stretch, and spent three nights in the hospital. He recovered and went back on air. The unvaccinated he blamed for “the rest of us” paying a price were not in that medical tent. He is still on CNN. The people he said were punishing the country lost jobs over a product that never stopped the virus from circulating.
He asked who was to blame. Then his own body filed a separate incident report.
