The Lord of the Rings – sheer masterpiece or just meh? Readers and experts are still divided. It's high time we changed that. So I’m beginning a doctorate on how world war shaped Tolkien’s epic story. Read on…

Greetings on Hobbit Day! I'm back from an unplanned hiatus with a talk on "The Undiscovered J.R.R. #Tolkien" at the Undiscovered C.S. Lewis Conference. Check out the details below. 1/3 georgefox.edu/cs-lewis-initi…#CSLewis
My talk is on Thursday at 7.30 Pacific Daylight Time. I'll be offering important new insights into C.S. Lewis's influence on #Tolkien – the man he claimed it was impossible to influence! 2/3 #CSLewis
Hosted by @georgefox University, Newberg, Oregon, USA, it's an amazing programme with a stellar cast of Lewisians and one Tolkienist (me!). You can still get tickets to watch via remote streaming. 3/3 #CSLewis
In Oxford Today (thank you @JohnGarthWriter): ‘The story, personalities and rich archival photographs make this a thoroughly engaging book for logophiles or those interested in this most enduring of achievements’ 6/
My book ‘The Making of the OED’ was published on 25 Aug 2016, so I’ve missed the exact 10th anniversary; but I don’t care. I'm going to indulge myself by quoting from the wonderful reviews I was lucky enough to get 10 years ago. (Yes, I kept a file of them, of course I did.) 1/

"Many people from other countries have been caring for my Dad. I want those carers to know we appreciate you" 👏 @andyburnham
Most of the carers who looked after my own Dad in 2012/13 in his Alzheimer home were Polish. They did so much, even using up their day off to travel 80 miles to turn up at his funeral ❤️The way they were made to feel unwelcome during the Brexit debate (many left because of it) was deeply shameful
“He did not simply preserve the traditions the war threatened, but reinvigorated them for his own era. His most distinctive success was with fairy-story.”

Broadcaster, scientist, and author Adam Rutherford has just sent this letter to senior leaders of Exeter Uni on behalf of its glittering signatories, who include Stephen Fry, Alice Roberts, Rob Macfarlane, Samira Ahmed, Emily Wilson, Marina Warner, Natalie Haynes…
I'm delighted to be back leading the first of four week-long summer courses for Oxford Lifelong Learning. My students for "Tolkien and C.S. Lewis in Oxford" are as wonderful, stimulating and unique as ever. It's an education for all, including me! 🧵 1/2

Today in 1936 #Tolkien's academic research got a financial boost that also helped The #Hobbit and #LotR. It gives me the chance to thank crowdfunders for the financial boost they’ve just given my #Oxford Tolkien #PhD and to ask for help in the next step.

“‘Realism has a knee-jerk tendency to avoid extremes as implausible, but ‘fantasy’ actively embraces them. It magnifies and clarifies the human condition.”
