So if Chicago is dead last for housing construction among large cities, is this a good time to pass a new ordinance that harasses landlords, adds costs to every lease, and puts Chicago back in the national headlines for the wrong reason? Of course not. And as an anecdote, my partner and I got pitched to co-GP a Class A+ apartment development in the West Loop. This is an ominous sign. We are not developers and we don’t swim in waters that deep. If guys like me are getting pitched deals like that, this is a sign that Capital is largely avoiding Chicago. Dead last is the result of that.

17-Year-Old Accused of Shooting Pregnant Teen in Back Leaving Her Unlikely to Walk Again CHICAGO (Sept 15, 2026) Angel David Funez-Reyes, 17, has been charged as an adult after prosecutors alleged he shot a pregnant 16-year-old girl in the back as she turned to walk away during an argument in Little Village, causing injuries that resulted in the loss of her pregnancy and leaving her unlikely to walk again. SubX.News® Crime Report 17-year-old Angel David Funez-Reyes was arrested by members of the Chicago Police Department on Sept. 14 in the 2000 block of S. California Ave. Chicago police said Funez-Reyes was identified as the offender who, on Sept. 7, 2026, shot and injured a 16-year-old girl in the 2200 block of S. Sawyer Ave. in the 10th District. The shooting occurred at approximately 7:11 p.m. during an argument. Initial police information said the girl was approached by a male she knew who produced a handgun and opened fire, striking her in the back. She was transported to Mount Sinai Hospital in serious condition. Funez-Reyes was charged with: One felony count — Aggravated Battery/Discharge of a Firearm One misdemeanor count — UUW Weapon Carry With Intent Knife The original CPD news release identified Funez-Reyes only as a 17-year-old male juvenile. The Cook County State’s Attorney’s Office subsequently confirmed he was charged as an adult, according to the Chicago Sun-Times. Prosecutors alleged Funez-Reyes had been harassing the girl for weeks in a class they shared at school, questioning her about gang affiliation. Prosecutors further alleged that approximately six hours before the shooting, Funez-Reyes displayed a firearm to the girl and her boyfriend. The girl encountered Funez-Reyes again at approximately 7:11 p.m. in the 2200 block of S. Sawyer Ave., where another argument began, according to prosecutors. As the girl turned to walk away, Funez-Reyes allegedly shot her once in the back before fleeing in a black vehicle positioned nearby. Prosecutors said the girl lost her pregnancy because of her injuries and likely will not walk again. Initial reports immediately following the shooting said the girl had been shot twice in the back, while prosecutors at Tuesday's detention hearing alleged Funez-Reyes fired once and struck her in the back. Police arrested Funez-Reyes on Sept. 14. Prosecutors alleged officers found a 9-inch knife on him when he was taken into custody. Court records presented by prosecutors also revealed Funez-Reyes was already facing vehicular hijacking charges and had been released from electronic monitoring on Aug. 18, with a 9 p.m. curfew imposed. Prosecutors further alleged Funez-Reyes had been arrested two days before the Sept. 7 shooting on aggravated assault, unlawful use of a weapon, possession of ammunition and obstructing identification allegations. In that incident, prosecutors said he allegedly threatened people with a utility knife while shouting gang-related epithets. Officers allegedly recovered the knife and two rounds of live ammunition, and prosecutors accused Funez-Reyes of providing police with a false identity. Funez-Reyes appeared for a detention hearing Sept. 15 at the George N. Leighton Criminal Courthouse, 2600 S. California Ave., where he was ordered detained while awaiting trial. He is scheduled to return to court Sept. 25 on the charges stemming from the arrest two days before the shooting. The charges and prosecution statements are allegations.
