Sir Arnold Talbot Wilson KCIE, CSI, CMG, DSO, MP. The Member of Parliament for Hitchin, Hertfordshire. Awarded the DSO in the First World War for swimming the Tigris River whilst serving with the British Army, reaching the rank of Lieutenant-Colonel. After the war he became a politician serving in Iraq. A prolific author he later became an MP for the Hitchin region. With the outbreak of the Second World War, despite being advised he should not join the armed forces, he enlisted in the Royal Air Force and trained as an Observer/Air Gunner. On 31 May 1940 in an operation over Belgium his Wellington bomber was brought down during a raid on Nieuwpoort, killing Wilson and two other crew members. At 56 years old, he was the oldest and most decorated airman to take part in an operational bombing raid. Wilson is buried in the Eringhem Churchyard, France. His name is recorded on the Letchworth Garden City war memorial.
