Nice little bit of piratey/maritime trivia: In 1634, parrots were such a popular pet amongst sailors going to and from Providence Island that the Providence Island Comapny mandated a 10 shilling charge per parrot aboard ships to prevent the ships being "pestered". #pirates

I am truly shocked. Trevor's work on Jamaica and the English/British Atlantic at large has been transformative to how I and others think about lived experiences of empire. Trevor has been nothing but encouraging to me whenever we have spoken, and was a bastion of the field.
We are deeply saddened by the passing of Professor Trevor Burnard. A world-leading historian, Trevor joined the University of Hull in 2019, served as Director of The Wilberforce Institute from November 2019 to June 2024, and was one of the foremost experts on Atlantic Slavery.

In case you thought we had no artillery. Here's our beautiful one pounder. After a pub conversation which went along the lines of 'let's build a cannon', Alan Birkbeck did. Here he is firing grape on our experimental range. The shot (musket balls) was recovered for examination.

Wonderful (terrifying!) morning @hayfestival talking about the lasting legacy of the #civilwars. Thank you @unibirmingham @artsatbham team for all your support!
Imogen Peck spoke at the @hayfestival today on ‘Memory Wars: The Lasting Legacy of Britain’s Civil Wars’, reminding us that the way we represent conflicts today sets the scene for centuries to come. And perhaps the best way to shape the future, is to look to the past.

For this week's 300th anniversary of the General History of the Pirates, I wrote something for @ConversationUK about how this one book defines our ideas about pirates, and what it might really have meant for its (still anonymous) author. theconversation.com/pirates-…
