Week 4 Iowa Small College Grades are In. The SGI professors had a light in class week as Nik Rule (Heart of America Commissioner) and the GPAC decided to send every Iowa NAIA out of state on the road this weekend. So, SGI had no in person evaluations to be able to make this weekend. But we were still able to catch games on streams and have virtual classes. *Star Student of the Week has to be UNI A+ as they hosted #3 Illinois State and won 28-21. Kudos to the purple guys in Cedar Falls and Tod Stepsis. You talk about a bounce back being in Kinnick playing the Big Ten the week before in a buy game and getting shut out. UNI has over 70 former Iowa Hich School Players on their roster. That's cool and get out and support these IA guys if you can. Grand View A: The Vikings amazing 73 regular season win streak was halted last week. They got a long road trip this week to MidAmerican Nazarene and convincingly won 35-13. The did not quiet cover the Massey line allowing a late back door (our entire SGI picked them to cover) 😀 Ghost would have been a perfect 6-0 on the weekend without the backdoor cover. Morningside A: Coach Steve Ryan is a HOF Coach so he and the Mustangs never look beyond next weeks game, but that doesn't mean SGI can't look ahead. This Mustangs look like a certified SGI Natty Contender and routed Mt. Marty on the road 42-7. Dordt A: Speaking of Natty Contenders the Boys in Black in Sioux Center look Playoff ready. Joel Pennings Defenders rolled into Concordia and rolled them 51-21 convincingly. Drake A: Being FCS Non-Scholarship is not an easy road taking tough buy games at FCS Scholarship schools like Montana and UNI with a brand new coaching staff and basically a whole new team. The Bulldogs have been kings of the Pioneer League and went down to North Carolina and in their first conference game put it on Davidson 51-32. The PFL is on notice once again this fall to be vary wary of Drake. Grinnell A-: The fighting Pioneers in Grinnell are a fun team to watch and root for. They let Beloit have it this weekend 28-7. If you can get into Grinnell you have a life filled with A's so it's a classroom grade their players have seen often. U of Dubuque A: The Spartans scored two TD's late in the 4th Quarter to pull out a thrilling win on the bluff against a solid McMurry FB team. Great work by Coach Mauiri and the Blue fellas on the Bluff, as they fought thru adversity for the W. William Penn B-: The Statesmen got down 17-0 in a game they were favored on the road in Missouri. In the Show Me state they showed what they are made of and pulled out a hard fought 23-17 victory. Just Win Baby @CoachBenavidez and the boys had another victorious ride back to Osky. Northwestern College B-: The Red Raider had a long bus ride to Hastings NE and put up a solid 33-26 victory. A close to 2 to 1 yard advantage means the score was closer than it probably should have been. Consistency is still being searched for in Orange City, but a solid win is always a good grade. Mt. Mercy C-: It's year one of the Football program so as Bill Murray would say it's "Baby Steps" this year. Mt. Mercy had a great first half and were leading a game they were not supposed to at halftime but the Mustangs ran out of gas and fell 33-21 on the road to Mo. Baptist. Waldorf C-: David Calloway's Warriors have a build from the ground up situation in Tree Town. There is no mythical NAIA portal that can help a first year HC in NAIA who was hired late in the cycle to retool a roster in a few months. It's going to take time, and in year one the roster size is up considerably. It starts with fighting for 60 minutes and Waldorf did just that in a 35-7 loss. Graceland D+: In a game that was expected to be tight the Yellow Jackets fell on the road to Willam Woods 41-34. Phil Stabacks team had had some frustratingly tight one score losses this year and are working hard to break thru in the always brutally tough Heart of America Conference (HOA). St. Ambrose D+: Speaking of the Brutally tough HOA getting sent to Benedictine (a top 5 pick to win the Natty every year) is a tall task. The Bees got shutout on Saturday 34-0. A Tall order for sure but a shutout stings. Simpson D+: Taking a road trip to Texas to play in Frisco at the Star (Practice Facility of the Dallas Cowboys) is cool and fun. Getting a tough 52-28 loss is not as the Storm had a rough day in Texas. Upper Iowa D+: The Peacocks lost another heartbreaker 34-32 on the road. Their third road loss in September by a combined 5 points is rough on psyche. The Cocks are good but just not clicking on all cylinders yet. There is still time to turn it round in the GLVC which looks completely wide open, but these so close misses have to turn into W's. A few students excelled this week @CentralDutchFB @LutherFootball @LorasCollegeFB but 5 struggled and Simpson and Dubuque were off but studying hard during the off week. Iowa College NAIA, D2, FCS Scorecard Week 3. Every week we grade Iowa College Teams versus expectations using the Massey Rating Lines. We are awarding our 1st SGI Doctoral Degree The FB Gods Rockne, Lombardi, Shula, Bear Bryant, etc. have been patiently waiting to grant this degree while GV Football has built an incredible academic career. They did not wish to grant the Doctoral Degree before the streak ended. So, this weekend Grandview got a C-, but for 73 regular season games the Vikings have stacked win after win. A great game between two of the best NAIA programs in the country that we got to thankfully cover from the Duke sidelines. The Rhodes Scholars of Iowa Football the Vikings have been a 4.0 Program for so long and for the first time in close to a decade in the regular season, they fell just short. Top Football Students this week - Morningside A+ with a big win at Dordt C-. This was a close line with Morningside and a close game between two top NAIA Teams. The Battle of the Sioux (City beat Center) in a great game. One of the best NAIA Rivalries in the Country and the Mustangs pulled out a close win. Dordt fell short but is one tough FB team. William Penn A: Favored by 17.5 but left no doubt in a big win over Mo. Baptist. Good Win means an A Paper. Upper Iowa B+ a 12.5 underdog on a super long road trip to Upper Michigan and lost by 1 in OT. Kicking games woes hurt, but they performed against expectations. The Peacocks let one they really had a great chance for the upset slip away. Waldorf C: Its not a win but closer than the 28.5 line. David Calloway and the Warriors are getting better up in Tree Town as they rebuild in his first year. Mt. Mercy C: Almost and covered the 3.5 line, but its a long road for any first year playing football ever program. Progress and fight on Saturday, and a great 1st home game atmosphere bode well for future years. Graceland D: lost a tough one at home being favored by 1. Tough fight but tough to lose a close one. St. Ambrose D-: Off to a strong 2-0 start the Bees took a step back this week and fell to Baker by more than the 10.5 points they were given. Briar Cliff and Clarke D-: Tough days against a tough clubs and neither came close to their cover. Northwestern College F+: Midland is a tough FB team and was only getting 3.5, but to lose to a team who hasn't beaten you in 25 years. That is a throw the paper in the waste basket followed by a match day. The Red Raiders are looking for consistency this year. P.S. UNI we are not giving a grade. Getting sent in to a Big Ten Coliseum and into the Lions Den for a buy game is what you have to do to fund FCS teams, but it is an apples and oranges comparison. UNI hopefully came out relatively healthy and can get ready for the rugged MVC Season.

Black Saturday in Iowa D3 - No way to sugar coat it for Iowa Small College D3 Teams in the State...the goal of 2 Iowa Teams making the D3 Playoffs for a record 4th year in a row unless, we get a miracle is......DEAD. Wartburg lost and was outgained 2 to 1 with one score for the Knights being a KO return. The score could have been much worse as UWRF Dominated Defensively and showed there is a big gap between the teams. Coe is leading going into the 4th and somehow loses going away. UW-Oshkosh flexed their muscle late and showed they were the better team by a huge distance. Tough back-to-back weeks on Clark Field versus the powerful WIAC. A very tough 5 non-con games that the A-R-C had against the WIAC. All were dominant wins by the WIAC over Coe (2) Dubuque (2) and Wartburg (1). This year that A-R-C vs WIAC skill gap is not a just a puddle to try and jump over it's a CANYON. @mikey_shoultz The dream of a 4th straight year of putting two Iowa D3 teams from the A-R-C in the playoffs is over this year...In our opinion. Cornell lost to Monmouth, Grinnell got shutout, Buena Vista lost in MN...thank goodness @CornellRamsFB , @UDubuqueSports and @scstormfootball had off weeks as the karma this week was bad. Really bad. Hey at least @CentralDutchFB won a good road game in Jackson MS. @LutherFootball won their Second Game which is awesome to see. @LorasCollegeFB played well with a strong win in MN. So as the weather guy would say, some slight rays of sunshine after heavy storms rocked the state in D3 Football Today. This week we may start the D3 part of our Pigskin Show with a Moment of Silence. All right.. time to move on and pass us another beer and on to next week.
