I agree with her. First off, she is incredibly talented, no doubt about that. But I am sick and tired of playing video games and seeing recognizable actors' faces everywhere.
I think Troy Baker is a phenomenal voice actor, but I don't want to see his face when I play video games. I think Debra Wilson is a great actress and an excellent voice actress, but I don't want to see her face in my games either. Nor do I want to see the faces of other easily recognizable actors. I have absolutely no problem with their voices, though.
The reason is simple: I want game developers to create original character designs and faces so that their characters feel unique. OR, if they absolutely have to use actors' faces, cast relatively unknown actors who are also great voice performers, like they did with Michael, Franklin, and Trevor in GTA V.
Or, even better, do what Rockstar did with Arthur Morgan in Red Dead Redemption 2. Roger Clark delivered a phenomenal performance, but Rockstar didn't simply copy his face and call it a day.
Now, imagine for a second if they had used Roger Clark's actual face instead of Arthur Morgan's character design. I'm sorry, but I genuinely believe the face Rockstar created fits Arthur Morgan far better. And before anyone misunderstands me, I'm not insulting Roger Clark's appearance. I'm simply saying that Arthur Morgan's facial design, which does share some features with Clark, is noticeably slimmer and has its own distinct look. It fits the character Rockstar created perfectly.
Or how about Kratos? Christopher Judge has an AMAZING voice and delivers an absolutely phenomenal performance as Kratos in God of War. But imagine if Santa Monica Studio had simply used Christopher Judge's actual face for Kratos instead of the iconic character design we know. I'm sorry, but NO. Absolutely not.
That's exactly my point. I want to experience the characters that game developers create, not constantly be reminded of the Hollywood actors behind them. Recognizing an actor's face can completely take me out of the experience, whereas a unique character design helps me become immersed in that fictional world.
And that's why I absolutely agree with Debra here.
