Today’s video commentary. The vast, vast majority of people with mental illness, even with severe issues, are peaceful and not a danger to anyone. And yet, there is a subset we should be concerned about. And what we’re doing right now isn’t healthy for public safety.
A UW student stabbed to death. A woman who needed a skin graft. A 75-year-old who lost sight in one eye. Two men killed with an ax. In every case, the system stepped in after the attack. @KIROCharlie weighs in on Seattle's mental health crisis and why nobody in office ever pays a price on this issue.

Today's written commentary:
OPINION: Everyone charged in these cases is either in custody or in a state hospital. The system finally stepped in. But it stepped in after a 19-year-old was dead, a woman needed a skin graft, and a 75-year-old lost sight in one eye. mynorthwest.com/kiro-opinion…

Here's today's video commentary. Leaders at the KCRHA appear to be dodging valid public records requests. Maybe this is the time to do something about it.
The records officer at King County's homelessness agency says she spent almost a year locked out of the CEO's emails. The same agency couldn't account for $13 million. @KIROCharlie says shut it down, replace it with an elected body, and give it a sunset clock with measurable outcomes.

Today’s commentary: I’m fairly certain the new owner of the Seahawks isn’t aware of the collective trauma Seattle fans have experienced with previous owners of our NFL, MLB, and NBA (RIP) franchises. But I do have a sure-fire way he can make us all feel a lot more confident.
Vinod Khosla was asked if he'd commit to keeping the Seahawks in Seattle. First five words: "I will never say never." By Saturday, he was on X saying the team isn't moving. Seattle has heard "never" from owners before. @KIROCharlie's response: sign all three Lumen Field lease options, Mr. Khosla. Lock it in through 2062.

The reason this is so concerning is that the Russians overtly have a biological weapons program. A simple leak of pneumonic plague, I suppose, is containable. Curable with quickly administered antibiotics like Cipro. But if any bioweapon modifications have been done to the bacteria, that’s where it gets hairy, fast.
Many of you have been tracking the Irkutsk lab situation over the last few days. I've been gathering facts and trying to understand what is happening before weighing in. Now that I have, I have to say — I'm concerned 🧵

Link to the Moscow Times, and screen shots (in Russian) in the event Russian gov't takes down this article, or edits it. My suspicion is soon the Russian gov't will deny the outbreak is plague, and/or blame something, or someone, else — as they've done in the past including with the famous anthrax outbreak at Sverdlovsk, which was blamed on contaminated meat but was really a lab leak from a biological weapons facility called Garrison 19. shorturl.at/dnn69

A last-minute FAA safety review of an FMS software glitch ahead of the impending 737 Max 10 cert revealed that U.S. airlines have all been skipping the latest updates. I wanted to understand why. The answer is exploration of this industry's incredible complexity. (no paywall)

To all @Seahawks fans and @12s, we have no plans to move the team, have never discussed it, haven’t even thought about it. End of story. I've said repeatedly we have no plans to change anything. Feel sad for the reporters looking for views and clicks who distort my answer out of context and sent an entire city into a spiral for no reason.

I could argue this is the most important game in Mariners history so far. 1995 postseason doesn’t happen without this.
On October 2, 1995, the Seattle Mariners and the California Angels met in a one-game playoff to decide the AL West division title. Adding to the drama, the starting pitching matchup featured Angels starter Mark Langston and Mariners ace Randy Johnson who had been traded for each other back in 1989 in a deal between the Mariners and Montreal Expos. Randy Johnson was dominant, striking out 12 batters and holding the Angels scoreless deep into the game. The Mariners broke the scoreless tie in the bottom of the 5th inning when Vince Coleman drove in Dan Wilson. Then, in the bottom of the 7th inning, Luis Sojo hit a bases-loaded, bases-clearing double down the right-field line—which turned into a wild sequence as the ball skipped past the 1st basebman JT Snow and allowed Sojo to hustle all the way around to score himself. Ultimately, the Mariners won 9-1, securing the AL West title and advancing to the postseason for the first time in franchise history!

I know no one will notice this comment, but how many of you were watching this game? I watched it visiting my mom and it was seriously, the greatest moment of Seattle sports ever for me. I was too young to remember the Sonics championship.

Elysian's Great Pumpkin Beer Festival started because a brewing miscalculation left them with three pumpkin beers instead of two. The co-founder's partner said, "That's the stupidest thing I've ever heard — we have to do this." 22 years later, they're tapping a 1,500-lb pumpkin this Saturday. 🎃 @ElysianBrewing

I read Annie’s book “Biological War: A Scenario” the week it came out in July. It’s heavily researched fact… along with a fictional scenario. Beyond terrifying. Can’t recommend enough. This is how and where her worst-case scenario starts. Only it’s unfolding right now in Siberia.
🚨Breaking. There's been a pneumonic plague outbreak at a BSL-3 lab in Siberia, Russia.🚨 "Nearly 200 People Under Observation After Irkutsk Lab Worker Dies From Plague" - Moscow Times This is fact, and also the inciting incident in my book BIOLOGICAL WAR: A SCENARIO, which is unnerving. Will post more as I learn more, including from Russian speaking sources🧵 shorturl.at/De4kW

You guys. They’re trying to resurrect the Blackbird. It hasn’t flown for 29 years. I spoke to the reporter who broke the story. Coolest thing I’ve worked on all week!
It flew at Mach 3.2 — Sea-Tac to JFK in about 70 minutes. The SR-71 Blackbird was the fastest jet ever built, and earlier this year the last one Lockheed ever made quietly vanished from its display at Edwards Air Force Base. Aviation Week reporter Steve Trimble tells @KIROCharlie that NASA appears to be trying to get the Blackbird back in the air.

Today’s commentary. The King County prosecutor is trying to get the legislative tools to crack down on copper wire thefts. I go over some of the cases, and what seems like a slam dunk of a solution. Hope #waleg makes this a priority next session.
Somebody pried open an electrical box at Loyal Heights Playfield in Ballard and cut out the copper wire. Now a bunch of kids run football drills in the dark. In Federal Way, WSDOT stopped replacing stolen freeway light wiring because the thieves just come back. @KIROCharlie digs in on today's commentary

It's National Comic Book Day! Before he was famously depicted punching Hitler on the cover of the first issue of his comic, Captain America was a concept drawing. That drawing was donated to us in 2018, albeit a little worse for wear. Here's how it was repaired. ⬇️ blogs.loc.gov/preservation/2…
