Society already accepts the concept of social role diverging from genetics when it comes to adoptive/step parents, immigrants, and people with dyed hair, so it shouldnβt be hard to accept trans people under the same framework as long as activists concede that trans women are not interchangeable with cΓ¬s women and therefore cannot be treated the same in every single circumstance. Biological sex will definitely be more relevant when it comes to sexuality, pro sports, medicine, and prison, but there might be more.
We accept distinctions like this when it comes to other social categories. An adoptive or step parent can be recognized as a legal guardian with all the same custodial rights, but they are still not the same as a biological parent and therefore cannot fulfill all of the same needs. Thatβs why adoptees often try to track down their biological parents to fill in the missing parts of their identity.
The third (and fourth, and fifth) genders present in certain cultures show that society is capable of separating natal sex from social role while maintaining stability and cohesion, though it bears remembering that they absolutely donβt work the same as the modern Western concept of βgender identityβ.
