A year ago today Billy Vigar died playing football because of a concrete wall barrier at a football pitch playing for Chichester City. This was not the first death or serious injury from such barriers, but the FA ignored coroner reports and concerns raised. It's taken this tragedy for the FA to get its finger out and recommend such barriers are removed. Fair play to the Premier League for helping with funding (and the FA, with £281m sitting in its bank account too) but it is still too late for grieving parents and loved ones, and shows a strange set of priorities for the governing body. bbc.co.uk/sport/football/art…

The FA can always find the time to attend conferences and events when it suits them

And although they said they'd address the problem Kieran they're still moving far too slowly in implementing change. There was an incident just last month involving a player being shoved head first into advertising boards & narrowly avoided serious injury
Could have been a very serious incident yesterday after Morecambe's Ronnie Blois was pushed head first into perimeter fencing at Harborough Town and had to be stretchered off. Thankfully he avoided serious injury and is ok, but the @FA need to speed up these changes asap

Additionally, announcing that such barriers needed to be removed the day before the 2026/27 season started was just dreadful PR; it made it appear like the last thing on their to-do list before a new season began.

It's amazing how the FA can never find funding for anything bar sticking the money in the bank....

Like cash balances held by Local CFA’s ….. do as we say not as we do ! It would appear majority of governing bodies / governmental organisations / charities are all one big club / scam. Highly paid executives, nice salaries, nice pensions & nice benefits ! FA like FIFA and UEFA

Note also the use of Forza goals that sliced open a Grimsby goalkeepers knee at Carlisle. They are still in use. It seems the FA aren’t overly bothered at times.

Recommend or mandate? There is a difference. Agree it took far too long to get here and even now there isn’t enough focus on when this will be done by. Clubs should be encouraged to use the funding and publicise their commitment to getting it done before there’s a repeat.

Playing football is not risk-free and there have always been walls & fences [and latterly photographers pits & advertising hoardings]. If you want to sweep away everything built in a less safety-conscious era then it will take much more than the 200m the FA are sitting on.
