Four months in at Wilmot, my favorite question is still "what would make this easier?" Then I just listen. Thank you to the therapists, nurses, physicists, APPs and staff who keep teaching me how things really work here. @WilmotCancer@UR_Med#AcademicMedicine
As Breast Cancer Awareness Month begins: for many patients, breast radiation now takes 1 to 3 weeks instead of 5 to 6, with the same cancer control in large trials. Thanks to our therapists, physicists, nurses and physicians. @WilmotCancer@UR_Med#BreastCancer#RadOnc
Tomorrow at #ASTRO26: Dr. Phil Sutera presents on biomarkers that predict who benefits most from prostate radiotherapy, and who's at higher risk of side effects. Less one-size-fits-all dosing, more treatment tailored to the biology in front of us. @WilmotCancer@UR_Med#RadOnc
Today at #ASTRO26: Dr. Kimberly Gergelis moderates a session on sequencing postmastectomy radiation with reconstruction, bringing plastic surgery and radiation oncology to the same table. That coordination is what good breast cancer care looks like. @WilmotCancer@UR_Med#RadOnc
ASTRO opens today in Boston, and our radiation oncology team is on the program all week: posters Sunday, a breast reconstruction session Monday, prostate biomarkers Tuesday, bladder injury biology Wednesday. Proud of this group. @WilmotCancer@UR_Med@ASTRO_org#ASTRO26
Last night I got to celebrate Dr. Sandy Constine, who won ASCO's 2026 Pediatric Oncology Award this spring, only the third radiation oncologist to receive it. Fifty years making treatment safer for kids with cancer. Proud to call him a colleague. @WilmotCancer@UR_Med#PedOnc
It's National APP Week. ASCO's study of oncology practices found 98% of patients knew they were seeing an NP or PA rather than a physician, and were highly satisfied anyway. Nobody was fooled. Nobody minded. Thank you to our APPs. @WilmotCancer@UR_Med#APPWeek
Today is World Cancer Research Day. Research helped avert about 4.5 million US cancer deaths since 1991. Now colorectal cancer is rising 3% a year in adults under 50, and nobody knows why. That's the next question to answer. @WilmotCancer@UR_Med#CancerResearch
Most people with cancer never join a trial, and usually not because they said no. A meta-analysis found there was no appropriate trial for 56% of patients, and another 21% were ineligible for the studies available. Offered one, 55% said yes. @WilmotCancer@UR_Med#ClinicalTrials
Falls Prevention Awareness Day. In one study of adults 65+ on chemo, 54% had dizziness and 48% had trouble with balance. Fewer than half mentioned it to their oncologist. If you're unsteady, tell us. It changes what we do. @WilmotCancer@UR_Med#FallsPrevention
September is Gynecologic Cancer Awareness Month. Cervical brachytherapy bottomed out at 44% of eligible patients in 2003. It's back above 75%. Four-year survival with it: 64% vs 51%. That comeback took people insisting. @WilmotCancer@UR_Med#GynCancer
A trial had radiation oncologists read patients' own symptom reports before the weekly visit. It changed our toxicity assessment 75% of the time. Our therapists see these patients every weekday and already knew. Grateful for them. @WilmotCancer@UR_Med#RadOnc#CancerCare
In one study, 26% of head and neck cancer patients had stopped eating by mouth by the end of radiation. Eating through it and doing the exercises each predicted a better diet years later. Speech pathologists and dietitians win that fight. @WilmotCancer@UR_Med#CancerCare
World Patient Safety Day. Over ten years, 41,516 events were reported to radiation oncology's national learning system. Three quarters never reached a patient, because somebody stopped the line and then wrote it up. That's the job. @WilmotCancer@UR_Med#PatientSafety
Today is World Lymphoma Awareness Day. A mentor of mine was cured of Hodgkin lymphoma with a mantle field, then died of breast cancer decades later. That is why radiation oncology learned to give less: smaller fields, lower dose. @WilmotCancer@UR_Med#CancerCare
A line I had in my head was a decade out of date: that 15 to 39 year olds got left behind on cancer survival. Newer SEER data says they now track with kids at 86% five-year survival. Cervical cancer is the exception, and it's going backward. @WilmotCancer@UR_Med#CancerCare
Last night a group from #RacOnc attended the Pluta Cancer Center Foundation's Emerald Ball. Grateful for a community that shows up for patients, for research, and for the cures still ahead. Thank you to everyone who gave generously. #PlutaEmeraldBall#CancerResearch#Philanthropy
September is Blood Cancer Awareness Month. There's no screening test for any of the 100+ blood cancers and no way to prevent them. Nearly every diagnosis starts with someone noticing a blood count that's a little off. Grateful to the BMT teams @WilmotCancer@UR_Med#CancerCare
