Husband: “My boss just offered me $200,000 to divorce you.”
Wife: “I’m sorry, what?”
Husband: “He says he’ll pay off our mortgage, give me another $100,000, and promote me if I leave you before the end of the month.”
She stared at him, waiting for him to laugh.
He didn’t.
They had been married for nine years. They had two children, a modest home, and a marriage that had survived unemployment, financial struggles, and the death of her father.
Her husband, Daniel, had worked for the same investment company for seven years.
His boss, Mr. Harrison, was wealthy, influential, and known for getting whatever he wanted.
Wife: “Why would your boss pay you to divorce me?”
Husband: “Because his daughter wants to marry me.”
She blinked.
Wife: “His daughter is engaged to someone else.”
Husband: “Not anymore. They broke up last month.”
Wife: “And what does that have to do with us?”
Daniel rubbed his forehead.
Husband: “Apparently, she has liked me for years. Her father thinks I’m the perfect husband for her.”
His wife let out a nervous laugh.
Wife: “This is ridiculous. Tell him you’re married.”
Husband: “He knows.”
She stopped laughing.
Wife: “He KNOWS?”
Daniel nodded.
Husband: “He says my marriage is the only thing standing between me and a partnership at the company.”
She stood up.
Wife: “And what did you tell him?”
Daniel looked at her.
Husband: “I asked for a week to think about it.”
She felt as though the room had tilted.
Wife: “You needed a week to decide whether to sell your family?”
Husband: “I was thinking about the children. That money could secure their future.”
Wife: “Our children already have a future. They have a father who is supposed to love their mother.”
He reached for her hand.
She stepped away.
Wife: “If you want to leave me, that’s your decision. But don’t dress it up as a sacrifice for our children.”
She walked into their bedroom and closed the door.
An hour later, Daniel received a message from his boss.
“Good. I assume you’ve explained the situation to your wife. One more thing: don’t tell her about the other payment.”
Daniel stared at the screen.
Then he deleted the message.
Unfortunately for him, his wife had already seen it.
And she had just one question.
“What other payment?”
