Accessing high quality PD is so hard for regional schools. 5 superstar teachers from Ararat West travelled to Melb today to learn about responsive teaching thanks to the legend @BronRyrieJones Can we get her here in person? 🙏 We are in the draw! #responsiveteaching25
Go West!
Watching the Victorian Prins Conference online. @JennyDonovan2 nailing it! This is music to my ears. Project Follow Through, what is and isn’t explicit teaching, MTSS. Victoria is on the right track. Bravo @BenCarrollMP 🙌🙌🙌
How could you resist this team, working on their playbook after school in the last week of this marathon Term 2? Still smiling! They definitely deserve a complimentary workshop 😉 #AraratWest 🙌

Thanks for keeping that blog post alive Pam! Helen, the BL schools that contact me are incredibly concerned about their reading data. That’s often what prompts contact. Data comes in many forms - three powerful quotes from this term below:
Took your advice @EminaMcLean Ballarat City Network prins all getting a copy of Leverage Leadership 2.0 at our first meeting on Feb 14th. Step 1: Data-driven Instruction (Ch 1) and Student Culture (Ch 5). Let’s see where it takes us! Excited is an understatement 🌟
It’s school holidays in Vic, Aust. and I’m at the beach but I can’t stop reading this book @karinchenoweth Every educational leader needs a copy. Can’t recommend it highly enough. THANKYOU
2023 Yr 2 student after almost 4 terms of Structured Literacy. First sample end of 2022 when they arrived from a Balanced Literacy school. ‘Frog’ sample is today. Second Year graduate teacher. T and S are VERY proud. Still a long way to go, but 🤩. Literacy is a human right ❤️
So this happened! THANKYOU @VPA71 and @Dally4
Two Prins from Ballarat ❄️are coming west next year to see you @McClementsinOz @RayBoyd007 @SerpentinePS We can’t wait to learn from you guys! I’ll be in touch! ✈️☀️
This sums up my job. Have worked most of the hols on OHS, admin, finance and school review. Also put this image on staff bulletin to thank ES who feeds school chooks all holidays. Sending list of OHS modules to staff and the giant chook popped up 😂🐓. This is my life…
My beautiful 14 month-old fully qualified therapy dog is at school most days. S’s reading to her isn’t what’s improving our reading results. It’s teachers knowing the SoR/SoL and applying that knowledge in their classrooms.
Breakout session with @MissLenehan and Paige (superstar teacher put on the spot to contribute to her Prins presentation 😉). Assessment schedules, use of data, use of ES, learning walks, coaching, instructional routines… similar journeys in so many DET schools. 🤩👏💪
Ask her about it Charlotte. She loves discussions with teachers and dyslexia parent advocates- not. I could not have less respect for someone. Oh, yes I can - @FountasPinnell
@StephLeLievre_
Watched lots of older presentations. Take aways? Booklets for content, knowing how many words students are actually reading in upper yrs and priority is teachers + books.

I think the article is suggesting boys need structured and explicit teaching - SSP ✅. Having a clear scope & sequence uses time effectively and leaves no child behind - boys or girls.
15+ schools have visited this year eg Friday, tomorrow and a request for last week of term🥵. Books on the table, handouts ready & inspiring quotes next to the coffee. Teachers willing to open their doors and share their practice. Not as experts but adult learners. What a team ❤️
The Reading League have a free e-book that can be downloaded in seconds - explains the what, why and how of the Science of Reading @NarelleLyn If you’re not sure why we need the term it gives an excellent summary.
A teacher trained in SW @riseliteracy , Language Arts @lifelonglit , TWR, SOLAR intro course @PamelaSnow2@tserry2504 (intermediate is in the planning!) and lots of professional reading @FIVEfromFIVE = most at-risk Yr 2 students slowly but surely becoming fluent readers 🤩
I’d say the Rose Report and the PAC are having a pretty positive impact on PISA data? It’s big picture data but it’s definitely heading in the right direction.
Update to Year 1/2’s reading dictionaries. Statement from one ‘Miss Stewart, do you know what an architect is? It’s a person who designs houses, specifically the inside.’ Reading gives low SES children the power to change their lives. Strong decoding = ⬆️ vocab! 🥲 @riseliteracy
Year 1/2 students reading children’s dictionaries in class because they can, during free choice activity time today. My heart leapt watching them. Second last week of school - still learning. One has gone from reading 36 to 93 WPM this year. Thank you @SWLiteracy @riseliteracy
Peak Twitter for me. @Miss_Snuffy liked a tweet. I watched an interview with her last night shared by a Twitter colleague here in Victoria. Always feel like I could achieve anything after listening to you Katharine! 💪📚❤️
It’s a Rock Rose Brad - really common in tough country gardens 😊 grows from cuttings, break some off and put into potting mix. I love them - they are survivors!
When a child comes to school with little pre-literacy knowledge and gets explicit teaching of letter formation, phonics (shout out to Sounds Write 👏) and sentence structure. It’s not quality literature yet but we are building a solid foundation. Structured literacy - yay! 💪👏😊
Sometimes I have REALLY good luck. Today was one of those times. 90 minutes with 52 other educators listening to the brilliance that is Emina McLean. So incredibly grateful that she’s within the Victorian education system. Come back after your break Emina and see your impact 👏💪
Reading, maths and science results of their 16yo’s aren’t tracking so well though. Need both I think - play, exploration and student choice BUT lots of explicit teaching too. Kids need to be taught 😊
I’m with you Troy re holiday reading - I’m grappling with this gem! Have read Greg Ashman’s book but not the writing one you have. Just trying to distill this for teachers. So much good info out there but we have to look in the right direction. Many approaches a waste of time…🤯
Sometimes students are in my office because recess and lunch times are hard. Today my little companion wrote a ‘healthy restaurant’ menu to go with his cafe.
Chicken, salad, eggs, salmon, healthy drink.
Encoding English is hard for beginners. But all the sounds are there! 😊🙌✅
You’re reading a vaccination text @EminaMcLean I’m finally getting around to this classic! I’ve read plenty of shorter articles and watched the authors recordings but not read his book. How great is it that this copy is our schools?
My kids went to the school where Greg teaches and hate getting in the car if ‘Mum’s listening to Mr Ashman’ 😂 I’ve only got a couple of gaps there! The Sweller podcast is getting a re-run 👍
When your second year grad teacher texts on a Sunday asking about phonemic awareness, orthographic mapping and her at-risk readers. Teachers seeking to build their knowledge about teaching reading ❤️💪🙌✅
It is an obsession 😉 LETRS course today, learning about the evolution of English. So interesting! Like so much to do with literacy, where was this in my teaching degree? How do you teach English without being taught how it works and why? So frustrating!
And this is the result - masses of professional learning post uni to fill the gaps. The lottery of which school and mentor a graduate lands with plays an enormous role too. It’s astounding to those outside education that there isn’t an agreed way to teach reading and writing.
My first tweet! New to Twitter 😊 although Pam Snow set it for homework after a BELLCoP in 2019! One of my wonderful teachers texting while on hols. On the school improvement journey 💪🙌📚
