Gotta love the talking heads on FinTV claiming the current market is different from 1999-2000 because unlike then, there is real earnings growth now. (S&P Operating EPS were up 30% from mid-1998 to mid-2000 because, you know, the Internet buildout!)
There have been 59 18-day periods that ended with returns on $SPX of 12.95% or higher, including today. Only 2 of the other 58 also produced new ATHs - March 23, 2000 and January 27, 1987.
We all know what happened in March of 2000. After gaining 41.6% off the 1/27/87 close up to its high of the year in August, ultimately, $SPX closed down 8.9% in one year up to 1/27/1988.
