See what the asteroid samples have revealed so far, and learn more about OSIRIS-APEX, the follow-on to OSIRIS-REx, which will study the asteroid Apophis after its rare close encounter with Earth in 2029. science.nasa.gov/mission/osi…
Stuck the landing!
Three years ago today, the OSIRIS-REx spacecraft released a sample capsule at the edge of Earth’s atmosphere to land perfectly upright in the Utah desert.
The capsule held a record amount of pristinely captured rocks and dust from asteroid Bennu. Scientists have studied the extraterrestrial sample, learning it contains all the ingredients key to life.
ALT A black, cone-shaped spacecraft reentry capsule sits upright, with its pointed end stuck slightly into the wet sand of a desert plain dotted with low green shrubs. Pale mountains rise in the distance beneath a clear blue sky. The capsule appears intact after landing, standing out against the light-colored, sandy terrain.
A historic delivery, three years later.
On Sept. 24, 2023, @NASA’s OSIRIS-REx spacecraft delivered the largest asteroid sample ever collected in space to Earth, giving scientists a window into the earliest days of our solar system.
Putting Dragonfly through the paces.
We recently captured static testing of the aeroshell for @NASA’s Dragonfly mission to ensure structural integrity. The aeroshell is critical to the @JHUAPL-built Dragonfly’s safe entry and descent into Titan’s thick atmosphere.
GPS is more than what’s in orbit. 🛰️
Ground systems command and control the constellation, manage its mission and help keep GPS operating around the clock.
The future of GPS is being built from the ground up.
Reaching Mach 5 is one challenge. Staying there changes the game.
Sustained hypersonic flight demands advanced materials, air-breathing propulsion and the ability to maneuver in extreme conditions. See how we’re pushing the hypersonic frontier:
Built to support the nation's need.
We're leveraging decades of expertise in hypersonic systems to equip warfighters with the tools needed to dominate all domains and ensure security in the evolving threat landscape.
From the ground up!
TIROS-1 built by RCA Astro, a heritage company of @LockheedMartin, set a precedent for weather observation. Launched in 1960, it kickstarted more than 60 years of critical weather surveillance, culminating in today's GOES-R weather satellite series.
🛰️ Weather forecasting has been space‑powered longer than you think — and it all started with TIROS‑1!
TIROS‑1 wasn't just the first operational weather satellite… it was a breakthrough that changed how we see our planet. In a new On Air video, we take a quick look at its early images and how they transformed global weather prediction. Watch the full video: s.si.edu/4rdWNxZ
GPS manufacturing is getting a digital upgrade. 🛰️
From AR and VR to 3D printing and digital twins, we’re using digital tools to streamline production, reduce costs and accelerate next-generation GPS capabilities.
GPS modernization starts from the ground up. 🛰️
We’ve received two @SpaceForceDoD task orders to modernize the GPS ground segment, strengthening the system behind secure, resilient positioning, navigation and timing for military and civilian users. Learn more:
To Bennu and back. 🚀
10 years ago today, @NASA’s OSIRIS-REx launched toward Bennu. Designed, built & operated by us, it later returned 121.6 grams of asteroid material to Earth, bringing us closer to understanding our cosmic origins.
Talk about taking the heat. 🔥
The heat shield we designed and built for @NASA's Orions spacecraft for the Artemis II mission really delivered! A member of NASA’s Aerospace Safety Advisory Panel said the condition of the heat shield was “highly satisfying.”
A sustainable presence on the Moon starts with reliable power. ⚡
Our Vertical Solar Array Technology could help provide continuous solar energy for future lunar habitats, mobility vehicles and resource utilization, enabling longer and more capable missions on the surface.
From concept to orbit — faster. 🚀
We’re investing ahead of need to build, launch and test operational prototypes in space, generating real-world data that helps mature technology faster and reduce risk.
