“Paid for by the US Taxpayer” is more accurate. And questionably legal.

THE SCHOOL-BOND SHELL GAME IS BACK. Bond elections are government’s favorite magic trick: contractors get paid today, politicians cut ribbons tomorrow, and taxpayers receive the principal-and-interest bill for decades. SAISD voters authorized $1.3 billion in 2020. Roughly $420 million remains unspent. Trustees recently admitted they could not confidently say how much money was still available for individual campus projects. The district is now seeking a forensic review of the program. Express-News reports that two senior administrators have been placed on paid leave amid the questions. Administrative leave is not proof of misconduct but an unresolved forensic review and trustees who cannot confidently account for bond money should stop any new borrowing in its tracks. Instead, SAISD wants ANOTHER $600M plus a separate 3.17-cent tax-rate election. And it isn’t alone. Across Bexar and Comal counties, school districts are asking voters to authorize more than $2.05 BILLION in new debt this November: • Northside ISD: $886.245 million • San Antonio ISD: $600 million • Comal ISD: $567 million Don’t fall for “no tax-rate increase.” That only means officials claim they can service the new debt within the current rate. The principal and interest are still repaid with property taxes, and the debt consumes capacity that could otherwise permit future tax relief. Texas even requires the ballot warning: “THIS IS A PROPERTY TAX INCREASE.” Vote NO on every school bond. Finish the existing projects. Publish the complete spending and debt schedules. San Antonio just passed its first property-tax-rate hike in more than 30 years and added or increased more than 100 fees. Families cut back when money gets tight. Residents deserve a full list of every new or increased fee in the adopted city budget.
