#BREAKING A CAR HAS PLOUGHED INTO NEWCASTLE KNIGHTS FANS SEEING THEIR TEAM OFF TO THE GRAND FINAL, AND NINE PEOPLE ARE IN HOSPITAL ๐
A morning of pure jubilation descended into sheer carnage today when a car ploughed directly into a crowd of Newcastle Knights fans cheering their team off to Sydney for the NRL grand final.
The festive atmosphere along Newcastle Link Road at Wallsend shattered in an instant near the Transfield Drive roundabout around 9.30am, triggering a massive emergency response as NSW Ambulance dispatched four helicopters and 15 ground crews to a horrific scene of devastation.
Among the nine victims rushed to John Hunter Hospital is an infant girl now fighting for her life after going into cardiac arrest amidst the chaos. A man suffering multiple severe leg fractures also remains in critical condition as medical teams scramble to save lives.
Terrified witness Dylan Prior, who had taken his two young daughters to see the team off, recalled the nightmare unfolding as a BMW rounded the corner revving wildly before tearing into the dense crowd.
"I saw some young kids go flying," he recounted, describing the agonising moments as helpless onlookers surged forward to help the victims.
Prior vented outrage over security, noting only a single police officer was stationed at the site, a presence he insists was dangerously insufficient to prevent the tragedy.
Newcastle Mayor Gavin Morris said the driver, believed to be a fellow Knights supporter, had reportedly been revving his engine shortly before losing control and ploughing into the crowd. Police arrested the driver at the scene as shocked onlookers watched on.
Newcastle Link Road remains completely shut down in both directions while police inquiries continue.
The grand final procession was forced onto an emergency diversion before the team bus left Newcastle, leaving a heartbroken community stripped of their celebration and holding their breath for the victims.
The Knights said their thoughts are with everyone hurt and their families, and anyone with information about the crash is asked to call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
